I've been researching purchasing the T-Mobile to go plan and I'm a little confused about the whole process. I was wondering if you can just purchase any phone or if you need to buy one of the phones specifically listed on the T-Mobile website...(http://www.t-mobile.com/prepaid/starterkits.asp)...?
Anyone with any information/explantion on the T-Mobile To-Go plan some help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The package option is the cheapest and easiest way to go.

Last May I went to the T-mobile store and bought 2 phones for the prepaid plan. I has been told previously I could buy any phone at the listed price. When I went in, the sales person said it was listed price PLUS $50 activation. In the end (2 hours later and a few phone calls to some managers), they sold me the phones for $80 upgrade plus $50 (about $20 more than I had expected).

I posted more details on the prepaid a few days ago for someone else's question. If you really want a different phone, you'll need to call or go to a retail store. I don't think you can do that transaction over the web.

I purchased a prepaid samsung x495 (nice phone); however, had problems in some areas reaching the network but had about 6 rasied bars. When I call t-mobile they told me prepaid phones do not have roaming and the service bars are coming from an assoicate network.

They said they would unlock the phone after 90 days over the phone for me or I can look on the internet for the codes.

SO FAR NO LUCK finding codes that work for the samsung X495 can anyone help?

I purchased 2 T-mo Nokia 6010's on Ebay and 2 2 prepaid $30/150 minute sim card also on Ebay.
I got the phones and the sims the same day, called T-mo togo gave the phone number magic markered onto each sim, and the IMEI for each phone, changed the phone numbers from Cali to TN, and changed the name on the acct all in about 15 minutes.

If the GSM phone is unlocked you can use it on t-mobile, cingular, or other trimode networks. I am told you can also use the unlocked phone while in other countries .

Cingular will hardly ever unlock a phone for customers but there are other services on ebay that will help with the unlocking.

However, t-mobile customer support told me after your with them for 90 days they will unlock t-mobile cell phones. That would be good if you decide to later to go with a different service provider.

The problem I am having is when I travel in a roaming area with a prepaid t-mobile phone it will not roam or permit me to make calls. I get searching for network or no service; however, the phone may show 4-6 bars. Roaming with t-mobile's associate networks is currently not permitted with a prepaid phone but customer support says they are "working" on permitting roaming for prepaid. I talked to the store where I purchased the phone and they say when making a call dial the area call... that doesn't work because the phone needs to first "connect" onto a network and with an locked prepaid phone it can only use t-mobile networks.
