so...this is what I have learned...please correct me if I am wrong.
Motorola does not place the locks on the phones
Motorola does not have the ability to unlock the phones
The locks are randomly generated by the service provider
The locks are kept by the service provider in a database
...these 4 make sense
Cingular is adament about denying the existence of these codes
When pressed, cingular is most decidely NOT in the habit of providing its customers with codes for their phones
Cingular claims that the ATT hardware is incompatible with their system
Cingular, when pressed, claims that they did not keep the ATT database with the list of lock codes for phones
....so far as I can tell these 4 are bald lies but I may be out to lunch on this...I'm not sure that the v505 only takes a code...it may take 5 seconds on a $170 clip instead.
moving on...
Cingular is ever so happy to sell a handset equivalent to the one I already have for about $200 (I need the go plan...)
and
When Cingular bought ATT they dead-ended all of ATT's handsets forcing ATT clients to migrate to their hardware
so
This is where I am. I have a lovely moto v505 AT&T handset that I would like to keep. I see an incredibly # of services on line who are ever so happy to take my money and unlock this phone. I would like to give Cingular some of my money but they are making it awfully difficult. I don't know enough about what is going on to be able to figure out who to trust.
Suggestions?

When ATTW was a company, they did not support unlocking phones
Cingular does unlock cingular-branded phones under certain criteria, but does not have access to the unlock codes for ATTW as they did not support it.
handsets cannot be made for a company that no longer exists.
you're right. motorola has nothing to do with locking phones.
hardware in regards to handsets are compatible...they can take a cing sim if unlocked, but ATTW sims will not work on cingular accounts.
my suggestion: get a cheap go phone and keep it as a spare, unlock the v505 and use the prepaid sim in it.

To that, ATTW sims do work on cingular accounts as long as the phone is unlocked. I have about 5 ATTW sims that I still use because I don't want to migrate to a wack Cingular plan. But you do have to unlock the phone. It will probably be about $40 but it is fast and simple...just search the internet.

I meant unless it's unlocked.

Mind you, any active account under former AT&T Wireless will remain under its native billing system (a system integration is underway, I think). New Cingular accounts and plans will not support a former AT&T Wireless sim card, but an old account and an old rate plan will: you can change AT&T Wireless sim cards on existing accounts, and that's it.
And the unlock codes aren't 4 digits long randomly generated; they're generally 8 digits long (or so far I've seen). And former AT&T Wireless'll give you a lovely run-around if you try to unlock the device. You'd be more effective asking a representative to eat their own face.

it's not a run-around, it's a flat-out no...we can't do. we don't have access to the info.
and yes...a billing conversion is underway, but it will not be customer impacting.

Yes. It's a run around. I've been there before. I've handled the ping-pong customers before. Tier 1 Customer Care for AT&T Wireless will disclose that those numbers are not available, and to please contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer tells them, those numbers aren't available, but the wireless provider should have them.
It's a run around to find out that, no, it's impossible. If the customer can't be told on a first call basis by a representative then, yes. It's a run around.

Still is impacting if they upgrade or migrate their equipment from their former AT&T Wireless devices and price plans to a Cingular enabled one, which will still require a new billing account number, cycle end date, &c.

i meant the conversion from siebel to telegence/ care (you sound like a rep, so i think you know what i'm talking about.)
I've heard reps next to me telling the customer to go to the manufacturer. for reps who know what they're doing, they'll tell the cust that we cannot. that's what i meant when it's not a run-around...if people did their jobs properly
