Hello,
I fly between Canada and US on a weekly basis (4 days in US/3 days in Toronto) and with my current provider, Fido, I am paying 100s of dollars just in roaming charges alone, not to mention their poor customer service!
I am fed up with Fido and ready to move to a US provider, but not sure if anyone offers free roaming in Canada. My 2 main criteria are these: 1) I want to go month to month or sign min 1 year contract 2) No roaming charges.
Can someone help?

rogers starts at 85.00 for 250 minutes. verizon has north america plans starting at 59.99 for 450 minutes.
t-mobile does not offer any N. America plan. neither does cingular.
i think in toronto they also have bell mobility.

I am starting to feel it might be cheaper to actually get 2 phones, one for US (and the other for Canada (have basic package) since majority of my calls are from family anyways.
As far as getting a phone in US, can someone recommend me a provider that I can go with on a month to month or maximum a year contract? Most of my calls would be calling Canada in the evenings, if that makes any difference to the price.

Cingular, T-Mobile and Verizon all offer 1 year contracts. if they're not advertised, you have to ask for the one-year pricing on the phone.
out of those three, the only smart choice would be verizon as they are the only provider with a canada roaming package.
going with 2 phones could certainly be cheaper depending on your usage. for example a 25.00 plan on rogers/fido and 29.99 plan on cingular. that plan gives you 200 anytime minutes, 1000 N&W. no rollover or MTM though. If you have an unlocked phone, you could just switch sim cards between one phone.
but that may also cause them to be easier to lose.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I went phone shopping today in SF and came accross a San Fran base provider called MetroPCS (www.metropcs.com), which seems to offer what I want, 40 bucks a month and no contract to sign. For long distance calls, I think I'll just use my calling card and hopefully this will save me some $$.
Has anyone heard of this provider before? is there anything in particular I should watch out for (it sounded a little too good to be true...)

metro PCS is a reseller...meaning they rent spectrum from another carrier... they dont actually own a network

hey i got a north america package that has no roaming charges in canada...there are no other plans like this anymore....att use to have the best NA package but since its cingular they dont offer it...my contract ended in december and its been 6 months since ive been traveling back in forth to the US....its a houston phone number, let me know if ur interested in maybe purchasing this plan from me....
here are the specs
550 anytime minutes
unlimited night and weekend (9pm)
caller id, vm, call waiting...
$39.99 USD
and i added te NA package for 9.99 USD
so the toal is 49.99USD and with the SAF and taxes comes up to 63 a month...i can show u the payment history...
again there is no contract and u cannot find a close plan like this in the US and canada (all US carriers do not allow free roaming charges, juss free long distance from the states....)
let me know if u are interested or if anyone is....
email me at chohouston@gmail.com
looking for 150 OBO....u can always cancel the plan anytime cause i served my 3 years....i dont want to cancel because its too good of a deal to juss throw it away, either i keep it or make a little bit of cash from it...
thanks

I have the Verizon North America's choice plan. Works nicely on my travels to B.C. roaming on Telus.
Text messaging and voice mail indication also work on Telus.
I used to have the ATTWS North America Package, but the ATTWS service went so far downhill after the Cingular takeover that I had to find an alternative.
It seems anyway, that Telus has more extensive coverage that Rogers in B.C., so I'm better of with Verizon roaming on Telus than I was with ATTWS roaming on Rogers.
