Does anyone here happen to be using a phone without 850 capability on Cingular in the United States?
I'm wondering if not having 850 capability is a big deal or not, before I drop $500+ for a 900/1800/1900 smartphone.
Thanks

cingular is dropping 1900 and going with 850. that phone won't work on cingular's network later this year.

850 is definitely the way to go, 1900 is limited.

check tmobile's coverage map. that's 1900 band. you'll notice its along major highways and big cities. if you don't live in those areas, you'll have a nice $500 paperwieght.

Wow, it seems we are doomed to Cingular's craptastic selection of craptastic RAZRs, RCKRs and CRCK Berries.

All this gross misinformation is great!
Where's your proof that cingular is dropping the 1900?
In oregon, Cingular is mostly 1900Mhz.
Lot's of people would be screwed if 1900 was dropped.
Any phone that is unlocked and has 1900 and/or 850 can be used with Cingular (not to mention ANY service provider).
You're not forced to use just the phones that Cingular offers..you just won't get any support from Cingular for it.

Cingular has decided to go with 850 and is dropping 1900, I don't know if they will keep the roaming agreements or not, but in my centre, the rumour is that they will not.
I had a customer call the other week becasue he recieved a letter stating that he could upgrade his phone for free, to a new cingular plan, or he could go to the store to get a free nokia 6030. he had another model nokia that was 900/1800/1900. that's why the upgrade was offered.

Rumor, given only one leg to stand on, will find another way to get around.
I've yet to see anything concrete to confirm that Cingular is dropping 850...anywhere.
The 900 won't work in the US. maybe thats why he was offered the upgrade..unless you're not in the US.

no...it worked on 1900 and he's had the phone for a long time. I know what bands N. America operates on. he got the upgrade option becasue it did not operate on 850.
850 provides better in-building penetration and allows cingualr to cover larger areas with fewer towers. with the merger, cingular now has the largest GSM network. this is why cingular has chosen to go this way.

let me get this straight:
850-good for buildings and large areas (basically cingular)
900-obselete in america(??????)
1800-????
1900-big cities and highways (basically t-mobile)
i haven't received my new phone yet, but it's supposed to be tri-mode and my former v3 that i had was quad mode. So if my new phone don't have the 900 mode than it really doesn't make a difference on cingular's network? I thought that was one of t-mobile's major modes on their phones, then if that's true, the dual-modes from t-mobile kinda stink, right? Then in that case, you'd need a phone to pick up the 850 frequency if you went with t-mobile i guess to get any kind of decent reception, right? I don't know, but I used to have t-mobile and their reception isn't half as good as cingular's, but i guess it depends on the phone you have. (of course, that's considering with the roaming agreements too.)
