Verizon operates on the 850 mhz and the 1900 mhz frequencies on the CDMA spectrum; on the Analog spectrum, 850 mhz is used. Analog is relatively universal, however decomissioned in most other nations (as well, Europe uses 900 mhz, even under analog networks); CDMA is not a universalized technology like GSM, that is not widely accepted as the communication standard. As such, the options of using your CDMA device internationally is limitted to say, the western hemisphere, Isreal, and Korea.

Hm. 285 million subscribers worldwide. Only 1 country in Western Europe supports CDMA digital technology. There are over a billion GSM subscribers according to this site there are 1.5+ billion gsm wireless subscribers, with heavy and accepted coverage in Western Europe.
Researching more, say, in Russia, only partial coverage and no national carriers are listed; the frequencies that the CDMA phones operate as 450 Mhz and 800 Mhz, which are not the frequencies used by American cell phones anyway.
You're right, they're worldwide. But for all intents and purposes, Korea and Isreal are the only places you'll be getting to use your American CDMA phone.
