I'm a little confused on Verizon's roaming policy. I see on their FAQ that roaming charges will apply when you are outside your home service area, but I don't see how to find out what this area covers.
I'm currently a student at SB on Long Island and so most of my calls will be from here. However, I live in upstate NY (about 6 hours away) and am trying to figure out if I will get roaming charges when I use the phone there. According to the coverage area, the phone should work in both areas but i'm not sure if I will have to pay roaming charges when making calls from upstate NY.
So, in summary, will I be able to use my phone anywhere covered by Verizon without roaming charges or will I only be able to use it around my University where it will be activated?

You will be able to use your phone anywhere.
Now as far as additional charges for roaming, as I understand, if you have a price plan under "Americas digital Choice" long distance calling and roaming are included. So you dont have to worry about additional charges other than airtime.
If you have one of their local plans then you will get charged roaming charges if you're outside the local calling area, but i believe you can add roaming for about 5 bucks a month.
But I would call them to verify this. Otherwise, you could get stuck with a HUGE bill if you dont have roaming.

They forgot to mention that the America's Choice II plans are all Verizon Wireless national plans that were started after February 21, 2005. The America's choice II plan works everywhere in the United States including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. You can use the phone anywhere in these areas without NO, I repeat NO roaming charges. If you activated your phone before the above listed date, your phone still might roam in some areas, but not a lot, considering that the America's Choice I network is just as big. Hope this helps.

no ac1 plans let you roam ac2 has no roam and only in verizon and partner in ac2 plan only
ac1 picks up other carriers like sprint and others for that prl so u pay to use others cell sites
ac2 is only verizon and what verizon has for that prl thats why they say no roaming chargers because you cant roam on others cell sites
am on ac2 and dont need to roam i just hope when i go to vegas verizon service is good lol
ac1 is a better plan if you want your phone to work on anyones cell sites and not just verizon or what verizon has for ac2
ac2 is a good plan for me since am in hawaii it better than a local dig plan with less min and no free ld to all 50 states

ACII does allow for usage on extended partner networks. What the ACII did was create a PRL that, once the phone the Verizon native network or an approved extended network carrier, the phone would to a 'no service' mode and only available for 911 service. If you have the pre-Feb 2005 ACI plan, the phone will roam when leaving any Verizon or partner network and charges would apply.
