I have an E800 that boots up and goes through the intro O.K. Then the phone shuts down. The on/off button refuses to work unless I charge the phone for a while. Then the on button works and the same thing happens. I know that some of the moto's shut down in the same way if you exceed the unlock code limit i.e. 5 attempts then you're out. Is it the same with the Sammy? Can it be cured? At the moment I am at the door waving good-bye to my money.

I had this happen to another D500 and it turned out it was a knackered battery.
It would get half way through the boot up then it would go through the shutdown.
I tried another battery from a mate and it was okay.

I have tried swapping the battery with a known good one but the phone refuses to boot. Could it be a software problem?

Indeed it could be a software issue.
If you have nothing on the phone you want try the master reset code. *2767*3855# and let it do it's thing.
(If it allows the phone to get far enough to put the code in obviously)
Or you could try flashing the phone with another Firmware the e700 cable works with the e800 and you can get flash files and flash software FREE here...http://avi-stuff.irde.to/files.php?catid=9
Good Luck.

I have tried the reset without success. But a friends phone was doing the same thing. I tried the reset eprom on his phone and it worked! I have a flasher cable but it seems to be duff. It is the type where the charger plugs into the box on the flasher cable. There is also a switch that is marked data and D/L. I did not get any instructions with this cable so I don't know if the D/L switch is to update the cable eprom or the phone. I also have a usb cable but I am having a hell of a time getting the usb/uart to install. I have 10 USB ports so I think I might prune them back a bit! I'll let you know how it works out.

Hmmm!
You sure that it is an E700 cable. I thought the V200, S300, E710 etc cable had the little box on it with the D/L and Data switch.
If it is definitely the 700 cable try switching the switch over. It has been a long time since I flashed a V200, E710 or S300 so I can' t remember where it should be. All I do remember is that one way you can download/upload pics and tones and the other way you could flash the phone.

Kiefels you were right on the money! The cable was wrongly labled. I checked the PCB on the cable and looking it up found that it is for the 710! I have ordered a replacement and am waiting by the letterbox. (Note to self - do not buy cables from dodgy men at boot fares!).
I thank you and my remaining hair thanks you!
