my songs all show up and everything, they just dont play...the timer says 0:00/0:00...i contacted verizon and they said that VBR (varing bit rate) encoded mp3s will not work, however, some of them do actually work, and some dont, it is completly random as near as i can tell as to which files play and which dont...but the same files always play, and the same ones always dont...

Here's the scoop on 2 gig cards and the VX8100
These are not compatible, but are useable
If you format the card by just putting it in the phone and taking it out, then copy 2 gigs of music on the card, you will only be able to play half the songs. The other half will give you either media errors or simply not play. Pretty annoying to skip over dead songs.
What I did (by accident) was insert sd card in phone and format it under the settinggs menu
menu=settings and tools=4.system=4.manage memory=3.=card memory=options in the lower right corner menu=then format. You will need a four digit passcode, I guessed and used the last four digits of my phone number and it worked.
This will format the card to 1gig, you will lose the other gig of space, but at least you won't have any dead songs on the card.
As far as getting it back to 2gig, havent figured that part out. Sandisk support told me I had to put the card in a device that is compatible and reformat, but who knows I dont exactly have tons of electronics that take SD minis.

Firstly, thank you for all of the help and information that has been provided in this thread thus far. I do have one question. I finally got all straightened out last night, and started copying my files onto my memory card - I was in a punk mood, so I took all of my punk cds and copied the mp3s of the songs I wanted onto the 1GB memory card. While there are 383 files on the card, the player recognizes all 383 files, it only plays the first 105 files. I know that this is not due to variable bit mp3, as they were all burned at 128kbps, and some that played just fine last night (before I had all 383 files on the card) will not play today. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Geof

I'm writing to possibly help those who are having problems with the whole "write-protection" issue on their card. There is a little switch on the side of the SD adapter (not on the miniSD itself) which toggles write protection on and off. Make sure it's not on LOCK.
In my case, I had the same "write-protection" error. I searched my card (for like an hour) trying to find this tab that toggles write protect on and off and found that the little tab had completely snapped off in shipment (had to send it back for a replacement).
Perhaps you might possibly have the same problem? It's a shot in the dark, but I figured it's worth posting if it saves one person two hours of their life.

I was wondering if any one has figured out how to put ringtones on the 8100 without using a usb cable and just the SD card?
