I just bought a VX 8100 in the last month or so. having never used an MP3 player before, i was very excited to make use of this feature on the phone. I went ahead and bought the appropriate USB cable (and even a 512 mb memory card). The thing is, i've had problems from that point on.
I tried to install the things i bought, and my computer for some reason does not recognize either my cell phone or the program that i should use to download the songs. ALso, my computer keeps sending a message that this program is not compatible with Windows XP/ I just would like to know if somebody knows how i can fix this problem??? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

What program do you suggest? I downloaded something called "BitPim" but it hasn't worked for me yet. I'd really appreciate some help...thanks.

BitPim is great for putting ringtones on your phone or Wallpapers, etc. But for MP3 you have to convert the music to MP3 format.
Once you have the songs in your card you need to download a WMA to MP3 converter. I used this one---> Advanced WMA Workshop 2.1HOT http://www.wma-mp3.com/
Get into the program...then get into the songs in your card and convert them to MP3. It's very simple once your in the program. It probably sounds complicated but once you download it you should be able to figure it out.
Let me know how you do.....

Hi tryoder... To use MP3's it is not necessary to use BitPim and a cable if you have a miniSD card and either a card slot on your PC or a card reader. I use the following procedure to rip tracks off my CDs, convert them to MP3 format and play them on my VX8100.
I rip tracks using DeepRipper software (free) converting them to MP3 in the process. I then use Audacity software (also free) to modify the MP3 file's volume settings to complement the VX8100. Audacity will even permit you to increase (or decrease) volume in sections or all of an MP3 file. I like DeepRipper since it connects directly to your DVD or CD hardware without interference from your PC's audio software like WinPlayer or RealPlayer. I might add that DeepRipper
and Audacity both are sparse on help files or specific instructions to you may need to experiment to learn their use.
Your miniSD card must have been formatted IN THE PHONE which will create appropriate directories on the card. Once I have the MP3 files ready, I load them onto the SD card directly from my PC using the card reader in the the "MY_MP3" folder. They move just like any file. You must retain the MP3 file extension.
This presumes you have phone firmware version 04. If you have 01, you would need to upgrade to 04 and if you have 07 you will need to re-enable the MP3 player.
Once this is done you can go on the VX8100 to " OK(Menu) - left, left - 1.Get Tunes & Tones - 4. My MP3" and see your tunes thus created. You can also use the front buttons with the VX8100 closed to bring up the tunes list - center button held for ±3 seconds brings up the list of tunes - left or right buttons scroll through the list.
Hope this helps.

chassuit,
you're help is so deeply appreciated. i have been so frustrated with this lately. i'm not very tech-savvy, and it has been driving me crazy. I still have a few questions, however. First, How do I know if my phone is an 04 or 01 or 07? and if its not an 04, where do i go to upgrade?
also...Do I still need the USB cables that I have? If so, how will i need to use them?
Thanks so much....and just so you know, i'll probably have a few more questions after you respond, so you'll have to be patient
Have a great day tomorrow..

Howdy again tryoder...
To determine the firmware version on your VX8100:
OK(Menu) - right-right - 4. System - 3. Device Info - 2. SW Version which wil read something like:
SW Version
T81VZ04
plus other technical info about your phone.
The last 2 digits on SW Version are the numbers - could be 01, 04, 06 or 07 depending on when you got your phone. 04 is preferred although 07 will work with another procedure. you will need to re-enable the MP3 player through another menu. I hope you have 04 - makes things simpler.
If you need to update, say from 01, you will need to take your phone to a Verizon store where the technician can update your firmware for you. If they tell you that they will go to 07 and that the MP3 player won't work anymore, that's partially correct, but don't panic... you CAN re-enable the MP3 player. You really don't want to keep 06 - it had some other technical problems.
Let me know how this works out for you.

Hi Again, tryoder
Of course, you will need to either have a miniSD card, or go through the permutations of BitPim and a cable to put them into phone memory. The card readers are not expensive. I read a post mentioning that WallMart stocked them, and stores like BestBuy and computer stores would stock them. If you do obtain a card reader (a very simple device which plugs into a USB port on your computer and into which you insert your SD card) be sure it can read the miniSD with its adaptor (or some can read even without the adaptor - which usually comes with the SD card). Windows automatically recognizes the USB card reader and no "installation" is requried - it shows as the next available drive letter. The actual miniSD card is about the size of a postage stamp (3/4" square) and slips into an adaptor about 1" x 1¼", the size which fits other devices, like cameras. You can also set your VX8100 to save pictures and videos you take on the miniSD instead of phone memory.
I usually obtain such items on eBay which is fast if you use PayPal. I use 512MB miniSD cards and always SanDisk brand.
As I originally wrote, moving MP3's onto your miniSD is identical to moving any file on your computer - just get the miniSD card up in one window, and drag & drop your MP3's into the MY_MP3 folder on the miniSD. As you can see, I'm a fan of the SD card route even though I do have a cable as well.
