I am currently a Sprint customer, but my contract is up and I am going to leave them for sure, I am tired of not having coverage in my house, even though a great deal of that problem is my old and worn out VGA 1000 Samsung. Anyway, I am not very interested in switching to Verizon, from the reading I have done, I just don’t like their business practices..aka, disabling bluetooth and installing their own UI over the the manufacturers UI. I am in the western burbs of Chicago and do go up into rural Wisconsin quite a bit, so I would like to have decent coverage up there. I know Verizon is pretty much without argument the king of coverage, but I am looking for an alternative. I have been looking at T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular.
I have a friend with U.S. Cell and he gets coverage everywhere. Never does he not have 4 or 5 bars. The phone he has is a Motorola 265 or something that is CDMA and AMPS capable. My real question is this. Is the reason he is getting such great coverage because of the analog roaming on his phone, and if I were to sign up through U.S. Cell and get a Razr V3C, would the coverage not be as good since it is just a CDMA phone. I know the Razr has a reputation for getting good reception, but I am just wondering if my service wouldn’t be as good.
The other option I have been looking at is T-Mobile and the new Pebl, its just a cool looking phone, granted the features aren't great, but other than web access and a camera decent enough to send annoying pictures to some friends with, that’s all I’m looking for, Ill leave the mp3s to the iPod and real picture taking to Nikon. Does T-mobile provide good roaming coverage? I can look at their coverage maps, but I don’t know how accurate they are out in the boonies of IL and WI. I know the Pebl is a quad band, so that should help its roaming.
Can someone shed some light on this for me. There are just too many damned choices out there I guess.

Tmobiles close up coverage tool is very accurate. If it shows coverage you probably have it. Most likely US Cellular and Verizon are roaming on each other, at least they do where I live, and they are both CDMA and AMPS so their coverage should be pretty much the same. By the way, cell providers have a 2-4 week trial period before you are commited to a contract, so try one and take it all the places you need coverage. If not take it back and try the next.

I don't know how you can find out how good every network's coverage is in every area and how good the reception is on every handset - but if that is your only worry you can just get a signal booster. They cost like $260 at the moment which I guess isn't the cheapest solution to your problem, but it does mean that pretty much any phone you get on any network will have great reception in your house (they have an external directional antenna and a relay for inside the house with an amplifier). The cheapest place I know to get them is Cell Booster - there's a lot more info there if you're interested.

I am sorry you are not interested in Verizon. I love their customer service. My recent experience with T- was horrible customer service and once we cancelled service they kept comming back with more bills for us, for a year.... the phones did not work where we moved to and with Verizon...they let you out of contracts if you move to an area with no service. Good luck in your searches....
