If I get buy a Verizon branded phone (say off eBay), they don't try to nail me with penalties for wanting to switch the number to a new phone do they?
I just trashed the LCD of my Samsung SCH-A650 on my engine block and don't really care for the phone anyway... might as well get a better phone.
on that note, I'm not sure how contact lists are transfered, but am I going to need the LCD on the old phone to see what I'm doing anyway?
thanks.

actually, i've done several phone swaps over the phone dialing 611 and not once have they charged me a penny.
I'm not sure where hawaii got his info, but they are very helpful over the phone and can do it in a a couple of minutes.
So if you have problems doing it online, dont hesitate to call them.

customer service will sometimes try and charge you for an esn change. but protest and its waived no problem. your best plan would be to come into a store.
and yes your phone book can be transfered at certain stores that have the equipment. the phone will need to power on but that is all.

On buying a clean phone from ebay.
Yes you can. Just to make sure you get what you need. Be certain of the following:
1. It is E911 capable (a must for a Verizon or any carrier phone.
2. That it is soecifically Verizon branded. Some sellers will say CDMA phone capable of use on VZ, Alltel, US Cell and Sprint. That's wrong and you'll be mad...
3. That it is, in fact, clean. If the seller is selling because thier account was shut off for nonpay or if the phone is stolen, it will be a no go.
4. That you are ok with not getting any warranty support from Verizon. Since the phone was not purchased from Verizon or an authorized dealer, you have no warranty to be honored by Verizon and, if the phone is new in the box, only the manufacturer to use for warranty work/resolution.
With that in mind, getting one from ebay is not the worst idea. It can be a buyer beware thing but you can get a good deal when you need a phone and an upgrade is down the road a bit.
Good Luck.

In the store you will be charged $20 per esn switch and an additional $10 for adress book swaps.
If you are swapping the esn yourself on verizonwireless.com make sure its not a Vcast capable phone. Verizon hasn't been able to give customers the ability to switch to vcast phones yet, so the only way to switch would be through customer service
