Anyone transferred movies to their phone? I read that Mobile Media Maker allows you to rip DVD to MPEG4 and will compress a full length movie to less than 128MB. Anyone have any insight/experience with movies on their SLVR? The screenshot for the software shows a movie being horizontally in full screen. Is that how it will show on the SLVR as well? And how is the video quality – is it even worth it? Thanks!!

I got the demo version of the software - it's pretty easy to use. It actually creates a 3Gp file which the SLVR can read. The demo only allows you to encode 2 minutes of video. Their claim that a full length movie will fit within 128 MB seems fairly accurate too. That's plenty since I have a 512 card.
I got my hands on a copy of Xilisoft's DVD to 3GP converter and I encoded Spider Man. It came up to 97 MB in 3GP, and plays fine on my PC, but my phone gave me an "not enough memory for operation" message when i tried to open it. I retried as MP4 and teh file was larger, 122 MB, no prob I had teh space - but same message came up.
The longest video clip I've been able to watch so far is an episode of the Simpsons that I dl'ed from LimeWire in MP4 format. It's 20 minues long and it plays fine. I need help on this - so if anyone else is trying to get full length movies on their phone please let me know how. If I find out 1st - I'll post it!!
GOOD LUCK!!
oh..........the screen shot..............hold up (it shows teh razr in this pic but the razr and slvr use teh same video settings 3GP/MP4 @ 176 X 144 res.)

Im new to the board - didn't know it was disabled. Hey, check out Xilisoft DVD to 3GP Cinverter. It's not free but I got mine "free". It seems to work but I still can't figure out why if I have the space on my memory card why the phone gives me an error message, regarding insufficient memory. Get your hands on Xilisoft (or something like it) and tell me if you have the same prob.
Oh 3GP is another video format that the SLVR plays. The SLVR Demo video that came with your phone is a 3GP file (check the details).

I hear ya!!
I'll send it to you. Maybe yuo can help me figure this out. I am convinced it has to do with the settings. Maybe my bitrates are too high. It's gonna be a lot of trial and error..................and TIME!!!!!!! It rips in real time (2hr dvd, 2 hr rip) on my 1.6ghz pc. Maybe faster/slower on yours.
PS: Cingular will not support this as they do not market the phone as a vidoe player. Motorola customer support hung on me because he guy told me maximum play back was 3 - 5 minute clips and I replied that I just had watched the 20 minute Simpson's Halloween Special on my phone - pretty funny!!!
Maybe we can start a sharing database. Once we get the damn movies to work on teh phone. But if you want I can send you stuff that already worked for me:
Simpsons Halloween Special & a hilarious 3 minute Monty Python skit. I'm looking for more mp4/3gp sharing groups but I guess this is all still new.
When you search mp4's most results are for the iPod and Sony PSP. Not many results t all for mobile phones.
I think I am developing OCD!!

Yeah, how can you send it to me? Can you send it via AIM or MSN? I have a 2.66Ghz laptop so it should be a bit faster, it only takes about 30 minutes to compress a 7GB movie to about 700MB

Hello, saw the post and wanted to add my findings so far.
I have tried various encodes from the nokia media player to the IMtoo and xilisoft one and 3gp converter
Well i thought i had this all sorted I have been converteing all sorts of videos from movie/ game trailers to ingame videos for a couple of weeks until i tried something bigger , I converted a 46min episode of the TV series Invasion and copied it onto the phone and all seemed sweet until after about 12 mins when a slight stutter started that continues from that point on. It's somewhat annoying as the video and sound quality are excelent, I am not sure if decreasing bitrates any futher will resolve it. Or if this is due to a delay reading from the 512mb transflash card.
I haven't seen anywhere from Motorola about recommend video / audio bitrates for video playback and it really annoying as it clearly has issues over a certain file size or video time length.
Also tried the Mobile Media maker demo and it doesn't do any magic encoding for full screen video it just seems that the SLVR doesn't support full screen video. From what i understand it would be an option from the video playback menu to play any video full screen if it was supported.

Jelly,
I think it does have to do with bitrates and yes length and size of video matters but it may just be a case of lowering bitrates to get more video to read. But the problem you described with that 46 minute video I have that same problem with a Shakira music video which is only 3 mins. So it’s gotta the setup of the movie itself. I saw a site that offered optimal bitrate settings but it didn’t seem to have the SLVR (though it had other Motorola models).
I think I am just going to bite the bullet and purchase the full version of Mobile Media Maker. The clips that I create with it are flawless. I am starting to think the settings are already optimized for each model. They have no support number and I’d be hella pissed if I paid $30 and then the full length movies still didn’t work.
DOES ANYONE HAVE THE ANSWER?
The w900 I read has 2 megapixel camera, up to 2 gigs memory (or was that 4?) and full screen video. I’ve has my SLVR less than 30 days. Hmmm?
