Go to your "settings" menu and scroll to "Networtk Services" Select the band your network is on.
I have no idea what your settings are I am afraid, I am in the UK. I know in some parts of the US of A you need a quad band phone, hopefully you are not in one of these areas.
The D500 is the best phone I have had. Even Nokia users are impressed by it.

For WAP setting for Cingular, check the post from modulator elmo01 on the following thread:
http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic29700.html
For MMS setting, check the other post from elmo01 on page 5:

Even without the settings in above post. You should be able to send and recieve texts. The smsc number is relevant to the SIM you use. It will automatically assign your SIMS smsc no. to the phone.

By the way, have you subscribe to MMS service? Check the following faq from Cingular:
http://www.cingular.com/media/multimedia_messaging_faqs#faq3
Hope it helps!

Try the MMS setting from Embassy's post on the following thread and see how it works. It seems that the Port should be 8080.
