I personally have had fewer dropped calls with my GSM phone, but I get very poor service with it. I keep my TDMA phone on 24/7! Half the time I can't get in/out with gsm. Thats in _NY_

Consumer Reports isnt any different than any of the other mags. Its all about personal opinion. They do their ratings on stuff just like every other mag does. And their middle man is called MONEY. Its all about money. |
How could it be about money if Consumer Reports accepts no ads?
It is right there in their website: It says:
We test, inform, and protect consumers. We accept no ads. And we've been doing it since 1936.
With this said, Cingular rated very poorly in CR latest survey. Verizon and T-mobile were 1st and 2nd respectively, again.[/b]

first off that is incorrect about fewest dropped calls, and for all you people out there who can be right beside a tower and drop a call I will tell you why, first i get this info right from the horses mouth, being a former employee for two years i don't care what anyone in that company thinks anymore, the reason you have dropped calls is because of the way you phone is set up, they may have alot of towers now but all the phones are not set up on the towers, the example i was givin by a tech support superivsor was this, a husband and wife could have cingular phones, exact phones on the same plan, one phone was set up to pick up(former) att towers first and the other cingular towers, if they both try to make a call from their living room sitting right beside each other and a cingular tower outside, the phone programmed on the cingular towers would go through and the one set up on the former att towers could go through but if another phone programmed to pick of those towers first tries to place a call in the area the tower can and may drop the call of the phone that is set up on the old att towers.

They should be sued for false advertising. This and rebates. The charges should be 100 million

noting that you are a former employee....and your info is most likely dated....
I am a current employee...the new network change didnt happen all at once...the tower identifiers are changing on a regional basis and is not yet complete...( almost now tho)...as each market is "integrated" the IRDB for that markets services (all the phones) get an updated... some phone miss the update...most dont

Always make sure you turn your phone off and on every few days to get the updates needed, also make sure you have a 3g SIM card if your phone will support it, if not move to the 3g world. Just some ideas to try and help peoples problems with dropped calls.

Print advertising that appeared today in The Wall Street Journal,
The New York Times and USA Today.
Cingular has made history after the leading independent, third-party wireless research company reported for the first time that we have the fewest dropped calls among all major U.S. wireless carriers.
Ads with this great news ran today in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and USA Today, also pointing out our network investment of over $6.6 billion and our 47,000 cell sites, the most of any network.
This achievement demonstrates that our company has crossed an important threshold.
In fact, said Chief Operating Officer Ralph de la Vega, this announcement is only the beginning.
“I want you to know that this is just the first of many more leadership firsts that you’ll see from us in the next year,” he said. “Cingular has a solid foundation that gives us a trajectory to industry leadership by every metric that matters.
"Cingular has the fewest dropped calls of any national wireless carrier. Fewer than T-Mobile. Fewer than Sprint. Fewer than Verizon. What can I say? It’s the network.”
The Findings
Telephia conducted drive tests last year in 290 markets across the country, covering roughly 88 percent of the U.S. population.
The testing team placed more than 1.5 million calls and measured the number of calls dropped versus the number of calls placed. The results showed that our Cingular network is significantly better than Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon on this key measurement.
Milestone for our Network and Customers
This growing level of reliability, strength and reputation of Cingular’s network will let us serve our customers better than ever.
“The Network Operations team has worked tirelessly on our network integration, improvement and expansion,” said Bill Hogg, Vice President – Enterprise Program Management. “It’s great to see this hard work begin to pay off by providing more benefits to the customer, which will start driving Cingular to the top of our industry.”
And this information makes telling Cingular’s story even more exciting.
“Having this kind of network quality performance gives us great news to tell customers and potential customers,” said Daryl Evans, Vice President – Advertising. “It’s a huge step forward and a great fulfillment of our advertising tag line – 'Raising the Bar.'” |
Thank Goodness. I just got my Cingular PTT phones today (5) because Verizon went downhill and Cingular is much better I hope

There's the Cingular claim and there's the Telephia research. Is Cingular's claim supported by Telephia's research?
Sort of, somewhat, in a way ... sorry, that sounds like "not really" to me.
See the NY Times article.

Or the Boston Globe article.

First of if you live next to a tower service will be less than par...towers go out not down...second If you have an issue with your service call in and complain...If not resolved call again...Cingular resolves most issue out there...as for California...Dont know about that area to much...mainly focus on southeastern region....Also depends what type of technology you have in cali...tdma towers have be taken down in western region...therefore service wont be "great"...What is the issue with your phone any way...And dont just say it doesnt work...that might be why Cingular cant resolve your issue. Be Specific! Issue cant be resolved with half @$$ remarks.
