Complete and total newbie with mobile modding here, so please, bear with me...
Recently purchased a RAZR V3 Pink from a Cingular store. No reason to unbrand it, and they were having a special. Quite satisfied, but the menus/etc. seem sort of sluggish. I figure I can fix this with a firmware upgrade (running R374_G_0E.41.C3R_B flax GSMV3MYCIN01NA0F5).
I have a few files I can upgrade the firmware with and a cable (my Canon G5 Camera USB cable works - funny that). I have a firmware file called R374_G_0E.42.0ER_MLP_Reflash.shx (it's supposedly the most current V3 firmware, correct?) and it was recommended on another forum that I upgrade the bootloader to 01.BR.R374_Bootloader_08_26_replacer before I upgrade to said firmware.
My question is - what exactly will these two replacements do to my phone, and is it safe to do so? Will it unbrand my phone? Will the firmware I have come in some wonky language I don't understand (though I'm assuming the MLP in it means multi-language). What will the new bootloader do?
Yes, a lot of questions. But like I said, I'm new to all this. I've read the FAQs and tutorials on several boards but I'm unsure if you guys are working with unlocked/unbranded phones and just want to know if flashing my official Cingular one will mess anything up.
Also been seeing posts about the V3c, V3i, etc. How do I tell which mine is? I opened mine up, removed the battery, and all I could see was "V3", no revision letter after it or anything.
I'm looking forward to modding my new toy, but I'm understandably wary. I'm sure you can all understand. It wasn't a cheap toy.
One last thing - flexing, to my current understanding, is modding a phone so it contains features of another brand of phone, correct? Like I can flex mine to Tmobile and I'll have different icons/menus/features locked/unlocked? I rather like the Cingular setup so I don't plan on flexing, if what I understand of flexing is correct.
Thanks for any help, and thanks for putting up with my n00bness (if you did, in fact, put up with it )
BTW, is there any *definitive* firmware flashing guide for the V3? I've read several, and they all vary.
-j
edit: if i end up flashing the phone, freeing up memory via that wonderful guide (how'd you get 10mb of space, man? mine has like 7.2mb), and doing other unholy things to it, is there a way i can restore it to factory settings so Cing won't suspect anything?

There have actually been two firmware releases since the one you listed: 42.0FR_B and 42.10R (the latest). They all work about the same. I've been running 42.10R for about three weeks now, and haven't had any problems. Actually the battery life seems to be improved somewhat. 42.0ER is an excellent firmware, but I have to believe that Moto has reasons for releasing newer versions.

As far as the bootloader goes, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do flash to 8.26, you could have some problems later if you ever try to unlock your phone. It doesn't really do much for the phone's performance by upgrading it anyway. It's not like a firmware upgrade.

Doesn't that link you provided contain the flash and flex, meaning it will erase all my settings and whatnot?
EDIT: success! upgraded to the firmware you linked me. and all is well and intact. still can't connect to medianet cause the dorks at cingular forgot to flag it on for me, but i'll go down to a store tomorrow and take care of that.
not quite sure yet what the flex would do other than erase all my junk (luckily, found a backup tool), so i'm not gonna bother until someone explains.

A flex would replace all the settings and files on the phone IMO there are only 3 reasons to change flex
1) You have screwed up modifying your phone and need to do so to recover it
2) You have changed provider and want to move to their flex or a stock one
3) You want to enable a specific feature (i.e. Video recording) and are not capable of doing the edits manually.
If you do not fit into any of these there is no need to flex

Thanks for the short explanation of the flex. So I won't be flexing. Video recording and everything else I want is already enabled.

No. They are just firmware relash files that won't affect your settings or language pack.
