I currently have Sprint as my cell phone provider and they want me to sign up for their internet service before I can connect to my ISP Earthlink using my cell phone.
Which provider allows free simple, direct access via a cell phone connection to my ISP?

I don't think any provider provides it for free. some will not require you to sign up on an internet package, but it will be charged per KB on a pay per use basis.

Do you know which providers DO NOT require a contract?
Also, I read that one could tether a cell phone to laptop via a USB connection.
Understand that this may be s-l-o-o-o-o-w getting a download. But do you know how it is hooked up?
Would I just dail my ISP's phone number?
Or what?
Thanks!

As far as tethering, their are 2 ways that I know of. Verizon contract customers can tether there phone to their PC with QNC. This deducts minutes from your plan, so if you have free N/W then if you do it thn it is "free". If during peak times then it comes out of your minutes.
There is also boost mobile prepay. They charge $.20/day for Data, and you can tether with Nextels connection kit. This is about $6/month without a contract.
And yes, both of these are slow. You can speed it up to dialup speed with compression software.
