To all:

Watch your Cingular Bill Very Carefully .. They are now starting to
Charge you for calls made to: *646# which checks yours Minutes Used
and recently (on 03/01 for me) they Charged me $1.50 for a
Directory Assistance Call to: 800-555-1212 which is a Toll Free
Number for "800' Service Directory Assistance

I was under the belief that ONLY DA calls to "411" were Chargeable
A call to 800-555-1212 & a talk with a supervisor there confirms
that there should be no fee to get their service ... except air time

One thing I can assure Cingular of is that if this nonsense
and outright thievery / overcharging continues, I will cancel
my service & go with some other co, such as VZ Wireless

the number 5551212 is directory assistance... the 800 denotes directory assistance for 800 numbers......that charge for 1.50 applies

directory assistance is a service run by landline providers and they bill wireless users for the service at a rate of 1.50 per call...

if you feel that you have been charged this fee in error do not call your wireless provider...

for that type of credit you should not disconnect their 411 call, but instead press ## to return to a 411 operator.

The 411 Operator will process a credit that will be applied to the customer's account.

customer care is very limited in that respect to crediting for 411 calls as it is not generated from within cingular wireless

Need info, help or just feedback if anyone else has had this problem. I have been with Cingular since way back when they were BellSouth Mobility...never had a problem with my bill until my boyfriend upgraded and got his black razr and then I just got the pink razr. His line always has random charges stating WWIND at like 1:50-3:00AM...then when I got my phone, which I have since returned this past week I have oodles of Oper Assist charges on my line. Went back and checked his billing and his is the same. Has anyone else noticed these charges? We never incurred them until the phone upgrades. I've since gotten a new phone and have no issues on my line at present...Let me know! I first noticed this when I looked under our daily usage & sure enough they have printed on the bill. Cingular is investigating however wondering if only me this is happening to or not?

Elmo ... I see where you are coming from, but it is not correct ... The only d/a calls that should be billed are to
either "411" or to any area code Except 800 and
555-1212 ... the company that provides the service
associated with 800-555-1212 Does Not Charge for their
service .... Local Telcos, when you dial say 212-555-1212
do Charge & as such it is acceptable, though overpriced
for Cingular to charge for them

Their billing software, must be modified to Exclude 800-555-1212 from the Billable Number list .. this only started happening recently ... if you do not believe it
check on your past bills for calls to the same number you will see no charge for it except air time

That's a valid complaint Bruceb... I checked with the resources available to any Cingular Wireless employee--and this'd be the information that we'd tell you if you were to call in and the rep does their homework--calls made to 800-555-1212 are billed only for airtime, NOT the 1.50 fee.

This does seem to be a new addition to their resources, though.

As for *646#, and really any of the * services offered by Cingular Wireless is free of charge: no service charge for opening a line to request, no service charge for receiving the information via text-message. Now if you are being charged, Cingular might have to look into that a bit more.

Well,. hopefully they will get the Billing System corrected
I for one, if I use that 800-5550-1212 anytime in the future
will go online the next day & verify if I was charged a DA
fee of $1.50 or not .. If I was, my next call will be to Cingular at 611 to get it removed

No, no, no, no! Cingular purchased AT&T Wireless at the close of 2004. Unlike, say Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, or Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless was a wholly seperate company from the home phone and long distance company, AT&T--it only shared the familiar name and logo. Every action and decision and move both companies made had nothing to do with each other. So when Cingular Wireless, a joint venture between Bellsouth and SBC, purchased AT&T Wireless, it had NOTHING to do with the home phone company. Which just purchased by Bellsouth/SBC.

And what's going to happen is a trickle-down effect. AT&T, formerly American Telephone and Telegraph, is the oldest telecommunications company in the world--ergo, the most familiar name. SBC/Bellsouth will be renaming their operations to AT&T, and soon Cingular Wireless will also take the name.

And hopefully, too, since I don't like Cingular's name nor its logo.
