I have travelled all over the world, and I've noticed that the USA is the furthest behind with regards to service. The rest of the world generally has lot's of low cost pre-pay, pay as you go SIMs that you can buy and recharge, while here in the US, it is very expensive. Here in the US, you have contracts to sign, while the rest of the world does not require contracts. There just seems to be so much more options in other countries...coverage seems more reliable, phone selection is better, reliability is better, better pricing, etc. The USA comes in last place when it comes to mobile service...why???

as with any other business its what the provider will supply for the demand...

people are willing to pay it so the incentive for the service providers to lower price isnt there...

it is improving tho... look at the standard rate plans 5 years ago... 39.99 got you a local plan no long distance you paid roaming you got 400 daytime and 3000 N&W with no mtm

and yes there are contract services and pre pay in europe are similar to USA/Canada.. I checked the major carriers in europe...)O2, Vodaphone , Orange... pricing is about the same... minutes a little less... text messaging options are a little better generally speaking... overall no big difference

virgin mobile blows. telus go the V3c awhile back. granted, we are behind on some plans, but can you get 20.00 plans in the states with the same amount of stuff? no.

ev-do has already rolled out and rogers recently announced plans to rollout HSDPA.

I can only compare the US to Germany:

We pay little for a phone with contract, but the prices are so much higher compared to the US (where you've to pay more for the phone).

But in between they get the idea... E+, one of the main providers, started sub-companies with cheap prices... SimYo, very cheap PrePaid, but no service at all if you've got a problem. Base, 25 Euro per month and all network internal calls and calls to landlines are included.

But I personal dislike E+ - don't know why...

And there is still the possibility to make a 1 month contract icon_wink.gif

i would have to disagree with the fact that virgin sucks for prepaid.. by far the best rates when it comes to prepaid. no stupid daily fee, 10c/min, sent sms. can't get no better.. well it could but then everybody would be on prepaid. as to the v3c i checked telus website regularily and i didn't notice it on there untill the beginning of march. the gsm coverage sucks.. ever make it up to prince albert sask? no/WEAK coverage up there and it is a bigger town (50,000+ ppl). rogers does have that cool feature for 8 dollars a month you get the first minute of daytime calls free (up to 400 calls that is)

There's a few factors to the high cost of service in America:

* The accessibility of service is not as widely available in the United States as it is in other counties. While every national wireless carrier has every urban environment covered, rural coverage is something to be desired. The lack of consistent coverage means roaming agreements, which are subsidized through plans that cost high to the minute.

* Number of wireless subscribers in the United States. In the States, about 140 million people are subscribed to wireless service, and there's still a lot of people to gain. The UK has more wireless subscribers than their own nation's population. A higher saturation in the market means that keeping customers from switching, and keeping them happy is more important. This'll mean they'll offer lower plans. Likewise, the fewer customers (or vice-versa, the few companies) means higher prices.

* Availability of technology and the regulation of technology seriously hinder rapid, global development. The limitations of UMTS and HDSPA in the 1900 MHz spectrum (or, the limitation of 850/1900 vs. 900/1800 MHz) sort of cut Vodaphone from just rolling out compatible networks. As well, requiring such limitations means that the manufacturers have to develop and produce phones specifically for the American Market.
