I'd recommend cancelling your service at the end of the billing cycle after the contract end date. You should be billed in advanced, therefore you've already paid the last month. So your last month should be good and done and zero.
[edit] Well, not entirely 0.00. Don't get me wrong, your monthly recurring charge'd be zero. But any additional usage charges are up for grabs.

pending the carrier...
former ATT bills in arrears... meaning the bill you get in april is the previous 30 days
from what I understand New cingular bills in advance meaning the bill you pay in april is for may plus any overages for march
unsure for the others...

if you are cingular (orange) not a old att cust w/ att equiment you are billed in advance so you could call in at anytime durring the bill cycle and have it canceled at the end of the cycle, or you can wait till the last day wich would be the 12th NOT 13th , 13th would be the first day.
i would HIGHLY recomend calling in atleast a week before the end of your cycle, that way there wont be a chance of another bill coming out , just your final w/ any usage charges

one more note... if you are taking your number to another carrier dont cancel your service.......... start the port on the final billing day... the new carrier takes care of the cancellation
