Normally every 3G capable card should work in "normal" GSM phones.
After all 3G phones switch back to GSM when thy are in a area with weak 3G coverage.
(all my 3G SIM cards work with GSM as good as with 3G)

Could it be you've got a "3" SIM?
I've read a bit on the net and many people stated that only "3" in the UK has blocked their SIMs for usage in GSM phones.

Damn!, The "3" network has the best tarriffs, at the lowest prices but it is annoying for not being able to use the sim in gsm phones.
I wounder is it possible to modify the phone or sim card in any way to accept it?

No for the phone.
Theoretically yes for the card, but they are normally protected and it would be against law...
Maybe you should call "3" and ask them for a new SIM card which works in a normal GSM phone.

I tried phoning "3" , but it seems its a breach of the terms and conditions of the contract to use the sim card in a non 3g phone
