I'm halfway through a two-year contract with Cingular. I just moved to a location about six miles from my previous home. I cannot make or receive a phone call in roughly a half-mile radius from my new location. Since I work at home, it's very important that I'm able to use my phone from my home. Now I'm forced to drive to a shopping center parking lot a mile from home to get enough reception to hold a conversation. Cingular is pretty much useless for me now. I plan on terminating my contract. Given the situation I've described, is there any chance I can avoid paying the early termination fee, due to zero signal strength at my home, where I make 80% of my calls? I wanted to get some feedback before I call Cingular. Any comments appreciated, thanks.

I'm not sure about Cingular, but I had a similar prob. with my Sprint phone. We moved across country to an area where there was no coverage. Sprint did waive the termination fee in my case. I hope Cingular will do the same for you! I'm sure someone in the forum has had exp. with Cingular and early termination.

Good luck,
Jenny

due to the fact cingular didnt make you move you might get away w/ a prorated etf. due to the fact there is still usage on your phone you probably wount get the full etf waived

Thanks for the info, guys. I'd be more than happy to pay a pro-rated fee. That's fair enough. Unfortunately, I don't live in one of the states where I automatically get it pro-rated.

BigRuss, I have a feeling your phone model would be superior to the motorola v220 I have with Cingular. Possibly the worst phone in the world! icon_devil.gif

Another option, if you don't want to cancel, is invest into a Fastfoward. The cradle is 14.99, and the service cost is about 1.99/month. Pretty much, all incoming calls are instantaneously forwarded to whatever phone your cradle is connected to. It also doesn't take away from your minutes, and it sinceit's instantaneous, it ignores the lackof coverage.

It'll just mean that all your outgoing calls, however, go through your homephone.

The fast forward cradle is actually a good option for people who not only want to save minutes but also have poor service at there house. However there is a catch to the whole poor service bit. The cradle doesnt actually connect to your home phone line. When you place the phone on the cradle it uses text messaging to communicate to the system that you have activated your fast forwarding. It then forwards to whatever number you set up in your phonebook as Cf1 - Cf3 depending on which number you want it forwarded to. Therefore you DO need at least a small amount of service to send a text message. If you dont have any bars at all I wouldnt recommend the fast forward device. Oh yeah.... for at&t customers they wave the monthly charge for the service itself

Another way to cancel would be to upgrade. You then have a 30 day grace period, discontinue svc. no etf @ all.

if you upgrade, then discontinue service, you'll be put back on your old service. this applies to ATTW customers, which seems to be where H82typ is coming from. this would not apply to full-on cingular custoemrs as they wuold only be upgrading the phone, not the account.

Rats! Just when I was getting my hopes up! The timing of my switchover to T-mobile was kind of screwed up, so I'm going to stick with Cingular for one more month. So I have a few weeks to come up with the best pleading I can to get out of it. I'm still hoping they'd be willing to prorate my ETF. I think that would be the fairest thing for both sides. Please keep the suggestions rolling in.... I appreciate any and all input. icon_smile.gif

cingular will wiave the early termination fee, all you have to do is go into the store and have them pull up your new address if it shows no coverage in that area and you want to cancell becasue of that they will waive it
