most unlocked phones will be just that...a phone... no phone number no rate plan... you wont be able to use it until you contact a service provider...

You will always get a great deal on unlocked phones. If you use your phone for just talking then its a great bargin if you already have a provider, however, what most people don't realize is when you buy a phone unlocked and you do have a service providers hours of configurations for the device can be needed. In addition to that all the services are still not provided. I work for t-mobile customer care and we can give our customer configurations for instant messaging and t-zones and picture messaging however they are still unable to download from our website due to the software and/or software version of their device. I personally wouldn't purchase a unlock phone no matter how tempting

Unlocked phones are fine. You can configure for free from the service providers website. They will send the settings to your phone. Make sure the phone is supported. It is easy and can be done in minutes. I have an "unlocked" phone and can download stuff. But it is so expensive you are better off sending the stuff t your phone as an MMS. The you are only charged for the MMS.

I have unlocked phones they work just fine if it's a nokia you put the model number phone number sevice provider and their is a configuration website only pay for a couple of messages to your phone if your provider charges for txt messages and the phone configures itself. I have no problems and my phone lacks the 2-3mb's of happy service provider loaded stuff on the phone so it's actually better it has more memory than a "branded" phone.

Phone Model: Kyocera Remix
Service Provider: AllTel |

Just saw this thread and thought this might help...
If you like the phones that AllTel has, but don't want them "gimped" you might be able to get around that too. With my AllTel service, I got the cheap $1 phone. (I knew I wouldn't have it long, anyway.) Then, I bought the Kyocera Remix from Virgin Mobile (prepaid service) for about $150 and called Kyocera for the Kyocera unlock code. (The code unlocked the phone so that I can use it on any carrier that uses the same technology: CDMA, TDMA, etc.) After putting my new number into the Remix as a new line and deleting the original line... Presto! A non-gimped Remix on the AllTel network. I gave my gf the $1 phone and now we're both using the same phone number on two different phones.
You have to be careful though. You need to get the same phone that the carrier you want already uses. That's why I went with the Remix. AllTel carries it and Virgin Mobile carries it as a prepaid version. If you can find something similar (prepaid -> monthly) you should be able to get around the gimped phone issue.
Another note: if you can't get the "unlock code" from the phone company / manufacturer, there are several websites that for a nominal fee ($20 - $ 50 depending on the brand / model) can send you the unlock code to your email.
