Burglar alarms delay Georgia’s new 762 area code
BellSouth, Area Codes
The Georgia Public Service Commission has delayed the implementation of the new 762 area code in north Georgia by six months.
The new area code, which will be an overlay over the existing 706 area code, will require all telephones with a 706 area code to begin mandatory 10-digit dialing before the new 762 area code can be used.
A-Com Protection Services of Columbus, Ga., a provider of burglar alarms and security services, requested the extension because it had not finished converting its burglar alarms in the affected areas to use 10-digit dialing. The company will be required to file monthly progress reports with the PSC saying how many burglar alarms still need to be converted.
Prior to the order, mandatory 10-digit dialing had been set to go into effect April 3. Pursuant to an order from the Georgia Public Service Commission issued Wednesday, that deadline will be extended to October 3. Until mandatory 10-digit dialing goes into effect, numbers in the new 762 area code cannot be issued.
The North American Numbering Plan Administration projects that the 706 area code will run out of numbers in the second quarter of 2006.

I had a sprint phone years ago in the 409 area code and if you dialed the 7 digits it would not work. I would give out my phone number and say 409... and wait.. if they didn't write it down i'd keep saying it 409. 409.. and then have to explain to everyone i give my phone number to you don't dial 1 have to dial 409-123-456 etc. or it says disconnected. it was RETARDED. I always dial 10 numbers on my cellphone as it's preprogrammed and my voip phone i had the same way always 10 numbers. 1 if necessary but most of the time not.

You know, I have actually had people escalate calls over the whole 10 digit dialing thing. "Why in the %^$&! do I have to do 10 digit dialing? That's long distance!" (keep in mind they are on a national plan)"
It seems the worst of them are in PAC, mostly in 619, 702, 707, etc. I have even gone so far to say "7 digit dialing is as archaic as the typewriter."

I have family in area code 409, I have heard them talk about that on few occasions, so to a degree, I can relate to your prior frustrations.
