A few things control what our max range is.

The type of signal in use (GSM)

The transmitter's rated power.

The transmitter's height.

The array setup of panels may cause the transmitter to be directional or omni-directional.

It may also be limited by local geographical or regulatory factors and weather conditions.

According to our NSG our Range Before the Built in Repeaters in the Tower is 40km (25miles). Our Tower Repeaters will Amplify the signal Up to 100km's Depending on Very fine conditions. Those of which I am not aware of. Only one i am aware of is if the Tower is Directional and on a Peak.

In areas like Southern Ontario we actually restrict the range of our towers to help prevent accidental roaming. We have them scrolled to have just enough overlap to have a clean Hand-off from Tower A to Tower B for example. But not enough to confuse the hardware in trying to figure out which tower to Lock on to.

CDMA for example (Aliant, Bell, Telus etc)

CDMA towers have no output limit (besides for that mandated) What actually limits these towers is the ability for the Hardware (Cell phone) to Transmit back to the Tower. Rule of thumb*; Level Terrain (50-70 km / 30-45 miles) ; Hilly Terrain** (5-8 km / 3-5 miles)

* Based on Tall Tower
** Based on Tall Tower; This is the Minimum Distance.

Most Common Information Can be Found By Looking up GSM in wikipedia.

Basicly Our Network support group will speak for the same thing. I wish i could post our Network Spec's on this but the Pages are on our Intranet Server. But basicly it's a compilation of Wikipedia and our Network System Analysis Documentation. Under this Documentation we can see the Ranging on Each tower. What they are boosted to, Or Dialed Back to.

Fooking MI is so hilly, no wonder rural areas suck for most companies.
