I have some problems with poor coverage where I live with my current provider, Verizon. After some investigating on their end, they agreed and said since I lived in a "marginal coverage area" they would release me from my contract. But I was informed that if I chose to port my number my term fees wouldnt be waived. Is that legal?, The fcc site states that a carrier can assign a fee but that it couldnt exceed their cost of porting the line. How much is that? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

the ETF is legal but you are getting ambigious responses... if verizon is releasing you from your contract ... that means no ETF... but in the same sentence they are telling you an ETF will be levied....
I would call them back for clarification....

it seems like they only will waive the fee if they get to keep the number....kinda like a bratty little kid.
if they don't charge an ETF due to poor coverage, then it should have no strings attached.
the other thing is that if they cancel your service, they can apply the credit at the time of cancellation. if you port, no one will access your account when the number is taken, so you'd have to call in to get it credited.

yes, they said they would waive the etf, unless I wanted to keep my numbers, than they would not. I think that 175.00 per line is a bit high to cover porting costs.

there are no costs associated with porting your number other than the activation fee at the gaining carriers end....(usually 18-36.00 per line)
what verizon is suggesting sounds somewhat illegal...the point I'm trying to make is the only issue is your ETF, verizon said they would waive it you should be able to take your numbers and go...

Unless you're a business person with advertisements linked to your phone number, I've never understood the need to keep it. Is it so difficult to tell your friends and family what a new number would be?
At any rate a number port can not be done on a cancelled account, you would have to start service with another company and then cancel the service on the previous one. At any rate a legal battle over the issue isn't worth it, not even to set a precedent or satisfy a principal. Tell them to place the number in a place near to there heads that is warm and smells reminiscent of open sewer.
