My son lost my wife's phone and Cingular won't provide a replacement. I have 2 other ATT/Cingular phones and 5 months to contract expiration.
Exactly what do I have to get (on Ebay) and how do I get it activated?
A basic phone is fine, she had a Nokia.
Thanks

Look on ebay for an unlocked GSM phone. You can pay anything you want for one. Take out the sim card from the old phone and then put in the new one. You are up and running!!

well, if it's lost, i'm assuming you don't have the old sim. you'd also need an AWS-branded sim. then you need to call customer care to activate.
have you looked into the option of upgrading to cingular?

I would really like to maintain the existing service at his time. So to recap:
I need an unlocked GSM phone and an AWS-branded SIM card.
Where do I get the card?
Do I need to call ATT before I buy the phone? Thanks

if you're buying through ebay, then you don't have to call. you can find sims on ebay or you can get them from cingular customer care for 25.00 and 9.95 shipping.
after you get the phone/sim, all you need to do is call customer care to activate it, you'll need to give them the IMEI from the phone (from the the phone label) and the ICCID (the numbers off the sim) it takes a couple minutes to activate.

we have sims still, they were out of stock a bit ago, but i ordered one the other day. ebay will have them cheaper, and a few cingular stores that used to be AWS or indirect dealers have some lying around.

I found the phone (whew!)
Thanks, for all of your help.
As for Cingular/ATT, they issued my contract after the merger and didn't infom me I would be on an "orphan network" that they didn't choose to support. Cingular can do anything it wants to support the ATT customer - obviously they choose not to.
I get to choose soon....
Again thanks!

it's not an "orphan network" it's due to the way your sim connects with the tower. they shut down not only blue towers, but orange as well in certain areas, whatever was better for business.
