We have been with the old ATT for almost 2 years, getting close to contract renewal time. Today I call in to Cingular CS to get unlock codes for a phone. Going to England and want to be able to use the orange sim there.
Cingular CS rep understood exactly what I was asking for and then asked me to hold. After 10 minute hold, came back and said that they would not provide me with that information and that I should switch to Cingular.
What does one have to do with the other? If we did switch to Cingular, would they provide us with unlock codes? We all know the answer to that.
So, a simple tech call turned into a sales call. If we had elected their option, would that have gotten us where we wanted to be? NO
Tmobile will unlock phones after 3 months, no questions asked.
Come June, we are gone from Cingular!!

YES, most of this wireless system is nothing but money grabbing ($$$$) from your pocket to theirs.
Wireless is just another scheme to control us.
SO SAD.
MONEY, money for the rich kids,

here is the Cingular policy on subsidy codes and they do not vary one iota from the policy
The device is a Cingular product and not one from another carrier.
The device is:
The original Cingular device used during the service period, or,
it's upgraded replacement,
Alternate Cingular devices may not be substituted.
(i.e., the original handset or it's upgrade replacement qualifies, a friend's or some other handset does not)
or, an eligible secondary market Cingular device.
The request to unlock the device is by a verified caller or through another carriers representative.
For Postpaid - Handset Purchased at a Reduced Price - Contract Period Not Completed, add:
The account is in good standing and does not have a Past Due balance.
The customer has completed 90 days of continuous service.
The customer has qualified for and has Cingular's International Roaming feature on their account.*
The customer has requested to have their handset unlocked.
Note: A handset does not need to be unlocked for Cingular's International Roaming Feature to work.
AT&T Wireless branded devices are excluded from this policy and will follow existing AT&T Wireless SIM lock policy guidelines. Existing policy is that no subsidy unlock codes will be provided to customers for Former AT&T Wireless branded equipment.

Yea, us ATT folks get it again from the boys at Cingular.
Contrast all that to the Tmobile policy:
The following restrictions apply to all account types:
T-Mobile can only provide SIM Unlock codes for phones that were sold by T-Mobile, or Cingular or respective authorized dealers. Note: Unlock Codes for AT&T handsets cannot be obtained from Cingular.
SIM Unlock Codes will only be provided after your account has been active for 90 days. Only one unlock code may be provided per customer every 90 days.
No SIM Unlock Codes will be provided within the 14-Day Buyer's Remorse period. Customers who purchase phones in CA California or via Amazon.com are granted a 30-Day Buyer's Remorse Period.
SIM Unlock Codes are not always available from the Manufacturer. However, T-Mobile will make a dedicated effort to obtain the SIM Unlock code. Note: Other restrictions may apply depending on account type.

wtf? it's basically the same. cigular will unlock their own phones, and t-mobile will unlock their own phones.
AWS did not support unlocking phones when they were a company, so nobody unlocks their phones.

Yup.
wp...
You REALLY don't like Cingular do you?...I bought a Nokia 6230 from 1 of my friends which was a factory replacement. It was locked for some reason, but Cingular helped me out hands-down. Businesses are businesses, you have to expect that. But everyone that I know that uses Cingular are satisfied with its services. I wouldn't be surprised if you start complaining about T-Mobile if ever you decide to sign up with them.

cingular will also unlock phones from a 3rd party with proof of payment, if it meets the other criteria.
