On that note,
Cing/ATT Reps:
Is it possible to sign up for new GSM service w/o a contract if you have an unlocked phone already?
I have TDMA and am not migrating, was just curious, b/c that info could be useful in the future.
Will asking for the no contract option work on the phone as well as in stores, or how does that work?
Thanks in advance.

you can sign up without a contract. the plan will not include mobile-to-mobile, as taht is a promotion taht comes along with a contract option, but otherwise, the plans are the same. you still need to sign that you accept the terms and conditions, but you don't have to sign a contract. you just need to pay for a sim card.

here's exactly as it goes:
| Quote: |
Month to Month contracts.
All customers activating service with Cingular who sign up on a promotional rate plan and/or take advantage of 1 or 2-yr commitment equipment pricing, are required to accept a 12 or 24-month service agreement.
Promotional rate plans are all rate plans that include unlimited Mobile to Mobile.
Note: Customers who do not sign up for a promotional rate plan AND elect to pay the "no commitment" pricing for the handset or activate with their own equipment, are not required to accept a termed service agreement. (12 or 24 month agreement.) However, they are still required to accept a "No Commitment" service agreement.
These service agreements contain all of the terms and conditions between Cingular Wireless and the customer, including the customer's price plan, terms of payment for service, and any additional services, as well as the terms and conditions of service. The only difference between termed (1, 2 or 3 year) and "No Commitment" service agreements, is that "No Commitment" agreements reflect "No Commitment" for the term of service.
Although the customer is not committed to any specific time frame, they are required to understand our policies and procedures which is covered in the Terms and Conditions.

Ok, cool. Thanks steva11.
BTW, does Cingular still offer any type of limited m2m. like 500 m2m min/month? Without 1 or 2yr agreement, like what used to be in some of their regional packages?
Also, does m2m work when calling between AT&T customers to Cingular customers and vice-versa if they have m2m on their plan? Namely for old AT&T GoPhones that had this option.
And does m2m only apply when calling between GSM suscribers, or will that work with GSM/TDMA calls too?
Thanks in advance.

I beg to differ... most blue networks are 850 and only a few are 1900 only... the vast majority are mixed coverage 1900 and 850....I dont know how long you have been orange tech..but mebbe you should consider a little research

I'm a former ATT Wireless customer and my 2-year contract expired over 2 months ago. A few months prior to that, my account information was transitioned to Cingular's new Online Account Management system because they were in the process of doing that at the time; however we would still be ATT Wireless customers unless we switched over to a Cingular plan. The week before my contract was up, I called Cingular because I had a few questions and wanted to verify my expiration date (which wasn't available online) and find out what my options were. The Cingular rep I talked with explained that I didn't have to convert or change anything if I didn't want to. He said that even though my ATT contract was up in a few days, I could just keep paying month-to-month and keep my existing ATT Wireless plan, which would remain the same as it was only without contract. I was pleasantly surprised by this. I asked him again just to make sure I heard everything correctly, and he again confirmed that neither my rate nor anything else about my plan would change if I chose to just keep paying month-to-month without signing a new contract. And sure enough, since then they have been honoring my old plan just like my Cingular rep had told me they would.
Sooner or later, I'll likely end up switching over to a Cingular plan. However, my old rate plan is comparable to what they offer now and since I'm happy with it, so no real need to rush at this time. Personally, I'm waiting for some of the new phone models to come out first before I make the switch.
I know there are a lot of former ATT Wireless subscribers on the same "boat", and I thought their gesture of honoring our existing ATT plans even after our contracts are up, was a good way of Cingular putting some of our minds at ease. Still, since it has gone month to month without contract, I wouldn't be suprised or at all upset if it doesn't last forever. That would be understandable. For other ATT Wireless customers, it would still be a good idea to call your Cingular rep and double-check if your contract date is also getting close.

here is the section ( a verbatim quote copied and pasted from terms of service ) of your agreement (contract) that covers your statement
IF WE INCREASE THE PRICE OF ANY OF THE SERVICES TO WHICH YOU SUBSCRIBE, AS SUCH PRICES ARE SET FORTH IN YOUR RATE PLAN BROCHURE, OR IF WE MATERIALLY DECREASE THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA IN WHICH YOUR AIRTIME RATE APPLIES (OTHER THAN A TEMPORARY DECREASE FOR REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE), WE WILL DISCLOSE THE CHANGE AT LEAST ONE BILLING CYCLE IN ADVANCE (EITHER THROUGH A NOTICE WITH YOUR BILL, A TEXT MESSAGE TO YOUR EQUIPMENT, OR OTHERWISE) AND YOU MAY TERMINATE THIS AGREEMENT WITHOUT PAYING AN EARLY TERMINATION FEE OR RETURNING OR PAYING FOR ANY PROMOTIONAL ITEMS, PROVIDED YOUR NOTICE OF TERMINATION IS DELIVERED TO US WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS AFTER THE FIRST BILL REFLECTING THE CHANGE.

That's fair that they would give reasonable notice of any such changes, which would give us time to consider things and possibly choose a new phone model. My rep also told me that if I decide to switch to a Cingular plan, that for ATT Wireless customers they will most likely be able to waive the activation fee on a new Cingular phone model (however they wouldn't be able to waive the activation fee on phones not purchased through Cingular).
