and he has an out-of-market phone # as well elmo.
sio basically, you would need to cancel the current service and sign up as a new customer with a local #. since you're under 30 days you can return everything to the store and sign up anew there. that would be the simpelist thing to do.

Thanks Elmo for the extra advice.
So I can't keep my current number? That, I'm afraid, is a no-go. I'm a short-timer in this state (only a couple more years studying here) and then I go back home. Plus, having a number from my home state allows my friends & family to call my cell without incurring long-distance charges.
After all this fuss, this is a bit anti-climactic, but thanks a lot for taking the time to try to help me out here. I hope that someone else, at least, can take advantage of your advice in the future!
