I have an unlocked V3i and I am on still on the AT&T system. I would like to switch to a Cingular plan. Am I going to have to sign up for a 2 year contract just to get a Cingular sim card? The only problem I have with the contract is I would like to save the 2 year commitment for the time when I need or want a new phone. At that time I would happily sign up for a new contract for the discount on the new phone. I hope I am making sense. Incidentally, I have been an ATTWS customer since 1998 and have been very happy with the service so I have no desire or plan to leave Cingular. Thanks,
Pat

You need to sign a service agreement to come over to cingular...wheather or not it is a 1 yr or 2 yr...talk to customer care about it, they'll work with you on it in most cases...Are you a converted customer?

another issue with unlocking att phones is that most att run off 1900 Mhz networks while most of cingular runs off 850 mhz....most market anyways...no don't get me wrong there are some markets that have 1900 but some don't...Ms, AL, La...etc run off 1900

I haven't converted yet. I was waiting for Cingular to come out with the V3i before I switched over. Unfortunately my V600 was starting to fail early this year so couldn't wait any longer. I bought an unlocked V3i off of ebay and it is working great with my at&t sim card. My contract is up this month or next. The only real incentives for me to convert are the cheaper service plans and cheaper international roaming with Cingular. If I convert now and sign up for a new contract and then need a new phone down the road I have lost my chance for a discount. I guess it's not that big of a deal. Thanks for the info!

Only sign a one yr contract instead of a year that way in 18 months then you can upgrade...in most cases they will make an exception to the rule and will have a record of you not getting new equip.

there is a no contract option, it's in CSP. i'm sure most people don't know about it. ask in a store if they can do it for you.

csp is an internal system, sorry, that part was meant for monarch. the contract only dictates the price of the phone. since you have your own phone already, there is a "no contract option"
FOR ELMO:
remember when we were talking about this earlier and it was kinda unclear? i don't know if they revamped it or if this is a new solution, but it's laid out much more clear here #40402

Thanks again, I really appreciate the information. Am I better off going to a store or callling customer care? As I said before I have been very happy with Cingular/AT&T since I first signed up. My bills have ranged from 125 to a high of 700(when out of the country) dollars per month and have no complaints.

it's hard to say. cingular certainly does offer the month-to-month contract, but you need to find a rep who is aware of it, as most reps will tell you it's a 1 or 2 year contract.
