I been wanting to switch to T-mobile for a while since it seems the support more phones and are less expensive since I text and dont talk a lot but I was wondering if I bought an unlocked phone like the Nokia N70 if I would be able to just get a plan with T-mobile and put the sim card in the new phone. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can do that. You will still have to sign a contract. If you are doing that you may as well pick up a free phone like a 6010 or whatever they're offering. It doesn't hurt to have a backup. Just a tip, since you text, as with any other unlocked phone the IM clients on the N70 will NOT work with T-Mobile.

I never use IM only text messages my friend has a 6680 on T-mobile and it works great for her so I am basing it off of that.

Yeah AIM.
With regards to voicemail, you will probably not get the MWI (little icon telling you you have a voicemail.) You will get an SMS instead with the characters @_ in it. Most unlocked phones don't know how to read T-Mobile's MWI and it is sent using the SMS system so that's why you get a text message. But you will be able to use voicemail and SMS fine, you might need an OTA but that's not hard. As far as T-Zones and MMS, when you want those set up just go to nokia.com and send the OTA's to your phone. If you call T-Mobile to help you get those set up you will get transferred to Tier II tech, who will try in vain to enter the manual settings (we can never get that shit to work and they won't give us the OTA's) and then transfer you to WDS who will just send the OTA from the website.
