As I really only want to buy one charger/data cable to use with both phones, can anyone confirm that the VX8300 accessory cables will work with the VX5200 without a problem??

The 8300 will definately fit the 5200. My husband and I have the same setup. We both had the 5200, but he left his in a public bathroom and it was immediately stolen. When we went to get another phone, they only had the 8300s...so I took that model and gave him mine. LOL!

Ok, here's what I did: We have a car charger from the 5200s, so I used my handy-dandy Dremel to file off the middle bump on the charger's plug and it fits beautifully.

This is a great fix if you already have a 5200 charger and don't want to spend money. But if you're looking to buy a new charger, then go with the 8300 model since all the 8300 accessories will fit the 5200 phones as well.

I bought a few 6100/7000 car chargers on close out. I filed the middle down one one and it now works for my 8300.

My question is whether anyone has had any trouble using the older chargers with the 8300. Do they overcharge or are there any other issues? It is weird that they changed the design. It seems likely that a charger meant for the 8300 might be kinder to the battery....

I know there are some more recent Sony camera batteries that look identical to generics but have new technology that helps keep the battery in top condition by properly charging (also Li Ion type battery). I imagine the battery and charger work in tandem to properly sense full charge etc.
