I know if I upgrade phones now I'll have to convert to Cingular. What I'm wondering is if that will still be true after this new re-buyout. Does anyone have any idea what the future holds for people who want to stay with their AT&T plans as long as possible?

it's only a rebranding. everything else will still be "cingular" except for the name. the network will only advance in the same direction so you'll have to get a new phone at some point and a new, current plan.
but we won't really know what it's like 'til it happens.

You will not be able to use your old AT&T (caps) equipment after the re-branding, the new at&t (lowercase) will not offer old AWS plans/services. at&t (lc) is actually a re-branding of SBC (who actally did the buying) the biggest change you'll see is that Jack (the Cingular Logo, little orange guy) will go away and the new style globe will replace him. I'm sorry if this post seems condesending, as it's not meant to. I'm just hearing a lot of speculation from inside the company, so I'm not looking forward to what consumers are expecting to get out of this.

A lot of long winded, confused, and upset customers (Blue and Orange a like) calling in to equally stressed, annoyed, and headache ridden CSRs.

I've been with AT&T since my first cell phone five years ago. I've moved three times and upgraded and/or replaced more phones than I want to count! I've needed to call CS or Tech Support for all kinds of reasons, some urgent, some not. Some due to my mistakes, some due to the company's. I have learned so much.
Overall I have had excellent, professional service from AT&T and Cingular employees both on the phone and in the various stores. I've always been a happy customer. I read the complaints in these forums and scratch my head. Are we on the same planet?
My husband complained the last time the USPS raised the price of a stamp. I didn't mind it a bit. I told him to think of the service rendered, that for a few coins we expect a piece of paper to reappear on the other side of the world in a few days. With rare exceptions, it works, and we take it for granted. Same thing with cell phone service. Yes we pay a bill, yes I have to sit on hold a few hours a year, but think of what we get in return. We have virtual total connectedness 24/7. Amazing!
I want to be a CSR. Is there a school I can attend?

does the OP understand that by spending $250 on a new phone and sim card they have "lost" their great deal with their ancient cell phone plan for a good year or two when you figure in total costs?

Oh yes, I've done the math. I've added the cost of the used phones and spare sims to the existing plan and compared it to what the new plans offer. I'm still doing fine considering the international rates. (And I only spent half of $250)
But also right now it's because I don't want to change numbers. I have been told that I absolutely have to get a new number and that would be a huge inconvenience right now. Next year...better.

if you migrate to the cingular network and cingular account instead of the at&t account you should still be able to keep the same number depending on the area

No I can't keep my same number. Previously, I have moved from state to state and kept my old number by choice. I'm about to move again and won't mind changing numbers once I'm settled in one place for a while.
I believe my only shot would be moving back to my original state and migrate to Cingular there, and then move to my new state and then... but wait! I'll want to switch again to a local number anyway once I'm in a permanent situation. See, it is not AT&T/Cingular's fault. It is my current mobile lifestyle. Once I quit traveling so much I'll be happy to switch. But only once. After my last move.
