I know and the only time you hear anything about skinz is when one of their kids shoot some school up....it's a shame the government feels a necessity to "blackout" indian press releases since the whole Leonard Peltier "set-up" I got a letter from Leonard last month his health is bad and he needs dental work but the prison officials have put off his dental priveledges for 7 weeks now....7 weeks is a long time for a man his age to have a bad toothache.....they say he is "on the roster" but that they are backed up....I and alot of other AIM members still email the white house everyday to ask for Leonards release. They have pardoned Nelson but not Leonard......sad.

I am sorry to hear that about Leonard. I actually have a friend who ws with AIM, way back when. I did not realize that they were still together, either. It is awful, and every time that it is a 'native' that broke into some place, it is on the second or first page of the paper. If it was a 'white' person that did that, it would not even be in the paper.
It is sad, and I know that here, we can only get the papers to print the word Native as it is suppose to be printed as a proper noun. But if You use the word Aboriginal, they will print it like this "aboriginal". I do not understand it.
Things like that just belittle us. Like we need anything else to do that to us, because noone has ever done that to us before.
It is a sad, sad, sad, world that we live in. I can only hope that by the time 'my time is up', that things will have gotten better.

i too am a metis from saskatchewan. Their is a reason why we get belittled, tormented, and scrutinized every chance we get from the media, because all the horror storys we hear about Native americans are mostly true (sometimes sounds worse than what really happened), and for reasons. they do have the highest substance abuse, suicide, unemployment, high school dropout, and murder rate in canada. they also have the highest percent of inmates in prisions. i am a victim of those statistics and know first hand that they are all true but the bottom line is nobody makes decisions for them, and their the ones to choose the path which lead them to those high statistics. what can you blame those statistics on? whose at fault here? them, plain and simple.
i don't know why people want to live on reserves, sure to preserve their culture, but the world is an evolving place to live so why don't they just go with the flow? i hear time and time again how native culture like to promote equality amoungst thier tribes and all that shit, so why do they strive to get advantages, and benifits that are obvious not in any sort of equal fashion to the rest of us.
sure white people don't get put on the front page of the leader post, while natives do, but in turn the natives treat the white people the same way. i know plenty of natives who hate white people the same way they hate us, and treat them the same way they treat us, but i don't know what it is they just can't seem to realize two wrongs don't make a right. they constantly burn peoples houses, heck beat up white people for walking on their side of the street, rob & steal, have organized crime (not too organized might i add) all for what?
i've read about the reil rebellion, and its not nice to know that a "leader" of mine was actually, clinically psychotic, so i hate when louis reil is depicted as a hero to my ancestors. what did they do, what did they want? all they wanted to gain was power, to be free and treated different from the white people and not be assimilitad, by means of violance, loitering, robbing and stealing supplies to help their rebellion. how does that make us any bettter than what the white people did to us??
all i'm trying to say here people is that EQUALITY must be gained, and none of what my people are trying to do is equal at all. they are the ones who put them into what they are today and yet blame their problems on other things but themselfs. i never once knew a native who took it upon himself to say "hey its my fault". always trying to blams something/somebody else. sure their were residential schools and other instances where it was beyond our control, which did have a huge impact on what happened and led to what natives/metis are today, but people, we have to move on. like i said i'm metis, and fully understand all the greif that we go through, but like you said fellow saskatchewanian: "I can only hope that by the time 'my time is up', that things will have gotten better." to have things get better we have to stop thinking we deserve more than what we do, and try to be equals here to have the results you wish to see

Good post It can apply change the name "indian" or "native" to another ethnic group. "white, green purple blue brown yellow orange?? " and it still applys

I do agree on justinflry post. I'm not native American, so I'm not going to say that I understand. But I grew up in the South Pacific and belonged to a so-called "tribe". I practiced the native dance/rituals and language.
I would hear about how the Spaniards took our land away from us, how we were mistreated, etc etc...and how the "white man" is using our land to build air force bases and other military purposes, all the while not ackowledging what modern day culture and technology has done for the island. Now, there are activists who are stating that they want to bring back the old way of life by saying that they want to drive out the military installations and any type of western culture. In what way is that moving forward?
It's one thing to talk about what has transpired in the past. But if you keep reflecting on those wrongdoings and putting blame on others, then there is no point in living in the present. If a person makes a decision, they must own up and be responsible to it. Otherwise, you're going to hear that same old line "I'm oppressed, and it's because of so and so. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't be where we are at." It's hard for some people to understand that yes, you recognize what has happened in the past, acknowledge it, and you build from it using it as a stepping stone to build your foundation for your future. Instead they become complacent and hold ill feelings towards the descendants of other ethnic backgrounds that they feel held them back. The only way to build for the future is to look towards the future.

Wow..never dreamed when I posted a little "red road humor" it would spark such emotion and I do have tos ay I am not from Canada so it is a bit different in the states....I do have a friend who lives in Canada in Hobema? (not sure of the spelling) and when we went to visit her I was shocked at the lackluster ways of the first nations peoples there....not may worked.most everyone drank....and it made my heart so sad. There is a high alcohol rate for skinz here in the states too....but there are fewer of us than any other race so the actual percentage is about 3% more per capita than the whites......our schools are getting better on the reserves here.....and the majority of people that I know that recieve mineral/mining rights checks or get checks from casinos owned and operated by skins.......deserve them.
Most all of the reserves in the USA practice tribal arts, teachings and lore they practice the sundance ceremonies and ghost dancing and we powow big here I also beleive that if someone is lazy or has no gumption...no matter what color they are.....they are what Ank-hana called "sorry as hell" hehehehe. Here in the states our Indian press is almost blacked out compared to the rest of the races that are in print. I am proud of where I have come from because as a small child I had to drink from non white fountains and my mother was only allowed to shop that last 30 minutes the Sears store was open back in the early 60's.....I also believe the glass is half full instead of half empty.....and my Granny was wise beyond her years and she used to say......you speak bad medicine..then you will taste its bitterness.....in other words to speak ugliness draws ugliness.....I may not like what goes on with the alcohol and drugs and gambling amongst my people but I will always hold my head up because I came from good stock....and all of a sudden I want a taco on good fresh fry-bread.....anyone cooking out there? LOL
