Depending on the monthly cost of your contract and the duration, you may be eligible to upgrade your phone (aka get a new one) with a $100 discount. It's called Every Two by Verizon. I believe that if your contract was for $39.99 or more per month and it was a two year contract you get a full $100 off.
Beware though, my contract just expired too and I am looking to upgrade. Once I do upgrade, they tell me that I will have to take on the new promotions, meaning that if you signed up for the $5 in TXTing plan, you'll now have to pay for the $10 one. Other than that I think everything is exactly the same. I know that the 39.99 plan has also gone up 50minutes from 400-450 in the last 6mo or so.
Hope that helps

okay thrasher was right on the new every two but wrong on having to change your text plan.
If you do your renewal online then yes it will make you change your calling plan and features to the more current ones.
If you go to a VERIZON WIRELESS store then you can keep your old calling plan and any outdated text plans.
If you decide to wait to renew then you just go on a month to month thing. If you wait longer than 6 months then you lose your new every two.

It could depend on your state, but you WILL most likely have to change your texting plan. The $5 Unlimited In-Texting plan no longer exists. It's not even in the computer. I talked to THREE different Verizon Wireless stores (the real people, not an authorized reseller) and they all said that in order to upgrade the phone and get the every two it would involve upgrading your plan as well.
I just went through this process about two weeks ago and got my new phone and plan. The good spin on it is that with the $10 Unlimited In-texting you get an extra 500 messages (rather than the 50 with the $5 plan), which you can use to e-mail yourself the pictures that you have taken with your camera phone, so it's not really that bad.

Okay, well I did go to an Official Verizon Wireless store after talking to three different Official Verizon Wireless stores in my area, all of whom confirmed the fact that I would have to switch from the $5 to the $10 in order to upgrade my phone. If you think that I was ripped off I would greatly appreciate your help in trying to help me rectify the situation. I certainly would prefer to be paying $5 bucks a month rather than $10.
The link to their location is: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/dispatcher?action=DISPLAY&item=_STO RE_DETAIL&storeID=203958&zipCode=13214
In case that doesn't work this is the info you'd find there:
