I'd like to piggyback on this question. I have the VX8300 as well. Can recorded sounds or mp3s be used as ringtones? Or are the only supported ringtones those installed on the phone or those downloaded from Verizon's site? Is bitpim the only solution for this phone? Is the MIDI format required? I know, a lot of questions. But the default tones leave much to be desired. Thanks in advance.

I have found that you can send small MP3 files as an e-mail attachment to your10digit#@vzwpix.com. Just make sure it is not too loud or you will damage your speakers. If anyone can figure out a way to convert 30 second clips to very small files and still have good sound, please respond.

Today i bought the data cable to the 8300 do to the fact that i was unable to use the previous one to the 8100 because the 8100 charging port is thicker the the 8300 i also found out that the bitpim work detect the 8300 so that answers the the "BITPIM ?" but if there is ne one out there that can fix this or has a way to detect the 8300 in bit pim let me no....

well i had success using a bluetooth adaptor with the 8300. bad solution really since its slow as #$#@. i think they crippled the bluetooth pretty bad or something. we're talking meg in 5 minutes kinda slow. anyways i just got it paired and then went into bitpim. it doesn't recognize the phone of course but you can view the file structure.
you then copy the mp3 into
/brew/16452/lk/mr (the ringtones folder)
rename mp3 as .mid
use audacity to raise volume/amplify whatever clip of an mp3 you choose, you can also lower bitrate to fit more.
i need to get a cable, wheres a good place?
others are
/brew/16452/mp is where the phonecam pics are
mf is the movie folder
course its best to use a flash card for those

1 - go to DOWNLOAD.com
2 - search for / download AVI MPEG to MP3 Converter
[toy with this for a while, note since it is a trial version it only converts HALF a song, or HALF of a minute of the song u choose. PERFECT for 30 second ringtones. TWEAK the setting to save it to for medium to normal quality, about 80 KBPS -still sounds good, keeps the file around 1/4 an MB and wont blow your speakers!!!]
3 - open the file and pick where to start, and 30 seconds after u want it to end, it will cut the minute to 30 seconds
NOW save it.
4 - open your email client
5 attatch the file to an email and send it to [YOUR 10 DIGIT PHONE NUMBER]@vzwpix.com
-you get a txt message, itll play the song, SAVE it as a ringtone.
there ya go.
i just got my phone 3 hours ago, there isnt a cable for it in our area yet... so i had to make do. enjoy and u can serisouly be sending yourself custom ringers in a good 4-6 minutes.

think theres an app that makes a .dat or something that points to the flash card as source ring tones so you have more space. its for 8100 that i know of, but i'm guessing it might work for the 8300, eaiser to work from the card than the damned phone memory
