I'm considering buying the VX8300 and have read The Rever's tutorial (excellent compilation job, thank you). I'm having 2 problems related to Audacity:
First: I downloaded Audacity (I'm on a Mac) and opened a music file in m4p format. It doesn't read the file correctly. When I hit the play button, the cursor doesn't move. I tried an mp3 to see if I was doing it correctly, and that worked. I tried changing the extension of an m4p to an mp3, and it doesn't recognize it. How can I convert an m4p to an mp3 so it will work with Audacity?
Second: I'm unable to "export selection to mp3" because it looks for LAME, which I downloaded, but it is compressed and I can't get it to unstuff. I use Stuffit Deluxe, and I downloaded the 8.0 upgrade, but it is looking for a registration number before I upgrade, but when I try opening my old Stuffit Deluxe (opens in Classic mode) to get the registration for the upgrade, it just keeps quitting and won't open. I'm on Mac OSX ver. 10.2.8. Is there any way around this??? PLEASE HELP!
Thanks.
In iTunes, go to Preferences and then to Advanced and then to Importing and change Import Using: to mp3 encoder. Close the window and go back into iTunes, select a song by pressing and holding control and click on your song. A drop down menu will appear - choose Convert Selection to mp3. It will convert the song. Find what you just converted and use that in Audacity.
Further, Lamelib does not need to be installed in the classic sense. Once it's on your computer you don't have to do anything further with it. When you're ready to export your ringtone from Audacity, Lamelib will invisibly assist in the process, making it work.
And you're good to go.

The Rever - Thanks so much for your suggestions. I had gotten Lamelib to work after my first post. It did have to be unstuffed before using it with Audacity, so I'm all set there. Only when sending the mp3 to tendigitnumber@vzwpix.com, it received but wouldn't save, so I was never able to open it (see my subsequent post sent right after my first). I mentioned that I haven't yet purchased the 8300 but experimented by sending it to my current LG phone, which is 2 yrs. old. I'm wondering if that's why it won't save since my phone's older and not as technically savvy as the newer models.
I had already gone into "iTunes prefs>advanced>importing>import using", but it was already set to "convert to mp3", and when I right clicked on a song in iTunes and chose "convert selection to mp3", I got a message saying "(song name) could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats". I just now upgraded iTunes through Software Update to see if that would make a difference and restarted my Mac, but to no avail. When I right click on a song, I still get the same message that it can't be converted. In my music folder, I noticed that all the m4p files have a lock in the top left corner. I clicked on Info to see if the Locked box was checked, and it was not, so I don't know what to do next. Do you have any other suggestions?

i just got the LG VX8300 a week ago, and the bluetooth dongle last night. my question has nothing to do with pairing the two - i got that down pat. my trouble is with the bluetooth on the phone. it shows that it's turned on, but the "BT connected" icon isn't there. how do i get it to connect to my laptop once they're both turned on, paired and allowed to connect to each other? i have no idea how to do that.

Well, I must say that after purchasing my vx8300, I learned a lot of stuff when I searched for and found this forum. I learned how to transfer my files to my phone using QPST. Which I must say, ROCKS! That little program lets you do a lot to your phone's file system.
I followed the instructions that The Rever left in the very first message of this string, and was correct to the letter. I now have a bunch of new ringtones on my phone, not to mention I found the folder for pictures and uploaded some animated gif's to use as wallpapers...It's pretty cool! THANKS Rever! your awesome!
Now, I have a question for you, or anyone else. Is there a way to change the startup and shut down screens on this phone? I've searched through almost all the folders and files on the phone and have found where the flash files are for wallpapers, and a bunch of other things, just not the startup/shutdown sequence screens.
HOw about games? Is there a way to upload games to the phone as well?
OK, I think that might be all my questions for now..I thought I had more, but if I do I'll post again.
THANKS!

I, too, had an older phone before purchasing the 8300 (an LG 4400), and so I'm a relative newbie at all of this, too. The ringtones I've made via Audacity and sent to my phone have worked just fine on the 8300, but I cannot speak to an older phone issue. It may be that older phones have insufficient memory space, or that they simply cannot play music.
As to your other issue, I import songs into audacity which are in AIFF format. It has been awhile since I've made ringtones or loaded music onto my 1GB card, so I can't remember why AIFF works best...I just know that it does. So, if converting your files into mp3 isn't working, try AIFF. And I have gotten around the protection thing by burning what few songs I have in mp4 to a CD, removing the CD from the computer, putting it back in, and then importing them to AIFF or AAC. That seems to remove the protection.
Farewell!

I do not believe you can change the start up/shut down screens.
While I am pretty certain you may upload games to the 8300, I do not know how. I believe you may use Verizon's Get It Now, and find what you want...albeit at a cost.

I just got my VX8300 this week and so far have a few questions:
1) I'd like to transfer my contact list from my old AT&T T616. It has the option to send the contact list over BlueTooth. I've synched the 2 phones, they recognize each other and the T616 is trying to send the list but it fails. I've heard the VX8300 BT doesn't handle file transfers. Any way I can do this? I really don't want to have to type in over a hundred contacts again. That is BS.
2) I have 1X and EV bars at the top of my phone. If I'm not using any data services, which do I want to turn off to preserve battery life?
3) I have the international clock set. Is there any way to display both local time and a second time zone on the front window? Some coworkers do this with their Sprint Sanyo phones. I sort of assumed I'd be able to do it with this LG phone.

If you have gotten the new firmware update (not all Verizon stores have it), you may make mp3 playlists as I understand it. If not, you cannot make playlists on the 8300 for mp3s. Some Bitpim-ers have done it, but I don't mess with Bitpim...
If you REALLY want to do it, rename each song so the first few letters are an indication of the album the song is on. For instance, a song "battlefield" on the cd album "Bring Us Back" would read as filename "bub_battlefield". All succeeding songs on the album will begin with "bub_". This will at least keep all the songs grouped together with their own albums. You still have to click through them, but the songs individually aren't all over the map, if you know what I mean.

Don't know about bluetooth - sorry.
Now about EV-DO -
EVDO or Evolution Data Only/Evolution Data Optimized (often abbreviated as EVDO, EV-DO, EvDO, 1xEV-DO or 1xEvDO) provides fast wireless broadband access (3G) internet service directly to your phone. If you want to surf the web, etc., it's great. If not, turn it off and extend battery life.
To get to this setting you have to go to the menu (press OK at main screen)>press 0 seven times>go to network select (3)>Mode Preference (1)> then you can select the options...
And I'm no help on the clock thing...
