Alright this is my first post here, so please be nice icon_biggrin.gif. I've looked through the first 5 pages or so of posts and couldn't find anything addressing my problem. I've just completed a 1-year family plan contract with T-mobile back in May, and I am now paying month-by-month. I'd like to get a good deal on a new phone, and I saw nice T-mobile deals Amazon and LetsTalk.com.

However I called T-mobile to make sure I could keep my number on my new phone, and the CSR basically said no. She said the only way I could keep my current number is to "upgrade" through T-mobile and proceeded to give me some very high prices ($149 for a T809, etc). I told her that was out of my price range and I could get much better deals elsewhere, and that was the end of that phone call.

After giving it some thought, I called T-mobile again. This time I told the CSR that we've been in the market for new phones/family plan since we've been paying month-to-month, and my dad saw a good deal and jumped on it. He mostly uses the phone for emergencies (a bit of a lie icon_cool.gif ), and didn't care about retaining his current number. I on the other hand have many friends and colleagues that have my number, and I would really prefer to keep my number. The CSR was very nice and simply told me that I could just swap the SIM cards and "reboot" the cell phone. I thanked him and hung up.

Now who's right in this situation? It makes sense that swapping the SIM card should work, and as long as I'm still using a T-mobile phone I shouldn't have to unlock the new phone, right? That brings me to my second question. . . If I buy a new plan online and swap SIM cards when I get my new phone, what happens to my new plan? Isn't the service plan connected to the phone number? If I keep my old number I'd have to keep my old plan right? Then would I have to pay cancellation to cancel my new plan that's linked to the new phone numbers that I don't plan to use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ya'll.

often, places like letstalk.com and other 3rd party vendors offer those deals for new customer, not existing customers who are upgrading. they will set up a new account for you with the order and supply a new phone number.

in that case, you would have 2 accounts now with 2 different phones, and phone numbers. if you cancel one account, you would have to return the upgrade from online, so it wouldn't work anyway. the sim swap would work if you upgraded through t-mo because you wouldn't be starting a new account, just upgrading on your existing account.

I used to be a business care rep, as far as i know any device u put your activated sim card into, should then become your phone# and services, this allows u to add data plans, like for an aircard, but u also have to swap sim cards in this case, hope this helps, this is my first post! I may still work for them hehe

Hi First let me explain that your sim card holds all your information to your account ex:Phone number ,Price Plan, so therefor when you take your sim card out and place it to another tmobile phone you have just transfered your information to that phone. Now I wouldnt recommend canceling your line and getting a new service plan just for a phone.Reson: you have to pay again the activation fee for all your lines plus you lose current phone numbers and the numbers from your contacts you have stored in your sim card (if youve saved them to your card). Now you can do 2 things you can either try to find a phone for cheap like on ebay where you just purchase the phone but there are no guarentees what you'll get (but you dont have to extend your contract just place your sim card in it)or you can upgrade with tmobile you can log on to my-tmobile.com and see the upgrades your lines qualify for .or you can call customer service and Thret to cancel they will offer you lower price but you will have to agree to 1 or 2 yrs of service depending on what you want to pay(2yrs=cheaper price on phone) icon_grin.gif
