I've had Cingular for about 4 yrs my last three phones have been Sony Ericssons, I stuck with them because they had good reception, but lately, their new phones SUCK my Z525 is barely even close to my previous ones in terms of call quality. Anyways I think what will determine your experience is the quality of the phone sure some have more feature then other ones but meh. I did a breakdown of the carriers before, but here's what I have to say individually about the carriers. Before I start I will note that CDMA does have very good voice quality with only one or no bars where with Cingular you usually need 3-4 bars to have a decent conversation
Cingular- The best phone I used with them was the Samsung X497 (It would have been perfect if it had a camera I also used a couple of my friends LG's and they work really well, I'd stay away from Motos with them the voices are faint. Anyways right now I'd say their best phone is the Samsung D807 (GREAT VOICE PROJECTION) or the LG CU 500 .
I only have one big gripe about them and it's the fact that the phone I have has a TON of interference with my radios/tv
gets REALLY annoying and makes it hard to talk.
Verizon- I think LG's are a good choice, just take care of them. Two of my friends both have the same phone and the condition they're in makes A HUGE difference, one was CLEAR AS A BELL and the other one you could barely make out JACK SQUAT that goes to show ya TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR PHONES! Overall I'd have to say with Verizon the RAZR is a REALLY GOOD CHOICE (SUPERBO EXECELLENTE VOICE PROJECTION one of my mom's friend has it and she was talking to my mom on my mom's phone and I was a few feet away from my mom and I could make out what her friend was saying WOW
Sprint- I would go with Sanyo, that's their trademark bran I borrowed one from a friend for a couple days and they're AMAZING.
T-Mobile- I dont have too much experience with them but I'd say Samsung or their Sidekick ot whatever all I know is Nokias and Motos have LOW VOLUME, where as Samsungs have NICE LOUD VOULUME

I work for VZW and TM.and i am currently a Cingular and Verizon customer.
I work in Southeastern Wisconsin. I hardly ever get returns from the Verizon phones that i sell. The churn rate for Verizon is extreemly low. 1.4% if i am not mistaking. There has to be something right about Verizon if there is such a tiny loss of customers. Just wanna put that out there right away.
All companies do have advantages and disadvantages, trust me on that one.
We get customers everyday who walk up to us and try to get there credit run .just to come back with a 400 dollar deposit for Verizon. Which is a problem, if verizon had lower credit scores, it would much more than likely be able to catch up to Cingular in the amount of customers. Many people get approved for TM way easier than Verizon in my experience. You can stare at a coverage map for a few hours for all companies and see huge differences. If you have access to the maps that agents are allowed to use you can see that Verizon coverage is indeed strong and the maps are more or less accurate. The tmobile ones are accurate also, but problematic.because the coverage just isn't really strong. Again, this all depends on where you live obviously.if you live out in the middle of no where, you have to use up your trial period and make sure it's worth your while to go with the company you are trying. Houses can kill so much of your reception and call clarity. your hand can do the same, your car can do the same. It depends a bunch on the network, but a bunch on the phone. I have verizon customers who use a LG 3400 hundred not be satisfied, but have had their friends come over with an lg 8300 and get reception just fine.
we've seen it a few times in this thread, you get what you pay for, that doesn't just go for service, it goes for phones too. (in most cases)
as for my personal experiences with Cingular V.S. Verizon.
I'd say Verizon beats out Cingular. I mean, you are paying virtually the same for the service, but Verizon call, text and internet is better by far in my opinion. But Cingular does have good coverage, and decent enough reception most times. The text plans suck and the internet is rather undeveloped. But once again, Verizon and Cingular have HUGE customer bases. Which is awesome, because I can talk to so many people for free because of mobile to mobile minutes. Cingular has roll-over, whoop dee doo.i have about 4500 roll-over minutes that i'll never see as soon as they expire after the year.
As for CDMA and GSM.sure GSM is awesome if you are going over seas all the time. but in the US in my experience CDMA is a better cell phone technology, i have WAY less failed initiated calls, and way less dropped calls with Verizon, (even with less bars.) CDMA is also more secure.Sorry hollywood celebs, those hackers will dominate your sidekick.
As for phones, I think Cingular and Verizon are on par with eachother, They both have a similar enough phone line up. The chocolates are pretty awesome.however the signal isn't great. Cingular does offer more phones, but that doesn't make them better. Verizon phones are more crippled which sucks, but is smart for Verizon, because if i wanna send a picture, it's gonna be a text so they make money. So it's selfish but, hey, they gotta make their dime right?
I haven't talked about other carriers too much because I haven't experienced them for my self. Just from what customers tell me as they switch. I recieve a lot of complaints about TM and Sprint dropping calls left and right. More sprint than TM tho. Just from experience, don't take it as bashing. US cell dominates the midwest (for voice) and dominates if you like national plans (which uses Verizon almost the whole time.) BUT they only have one internet tower to their name as far as a rep told me.
All in all I would rank the biggest carrier companies in 2 categories.
Overalls.
Verizon
Cingular
US Cellular
Tmobile
Sprint/Nextel
and in Voice.
1. Verizon (few dropped calls, great reception most the time)
2. US Cell (VERY few dropped calls, great reception)
3. Sprint (more than a few dropped calls, but over all good clarity for
what you pay because of the CDMA network)
4.(tie) Cingular (many failed initiated calls, quite a few dropped calls, not
worth the money when you could just pay VZW the same
amount)
4.(tie)Tmobile (many dropped calls, average to lower reception, poor
coverage but it's still really cheap and depending on your
area, worth the lower pay)
sorry to write the book, feel free to disagree.
but please remember this is just one man's opinion.
thanks

I had Verizon wireless, loved their reception/service. However, I hated their phones ever since their new UI came out. Also, their phones are pretty crappy IMO, (unless you get an Asian import phone). I switched to t-mobile and got a t809. A year later, I got a european import d900.
Tmobiles reception is great where I live, although not quite up to Verizons. It has been improving as more towers are added.

My Sprint contract is up and I thought I'd switch to Cingular because of being able to swap the SIM (my sister gave me her sprint phone and I had it activated. The rep didn't tell me it reset my rebate status!) and use any phone I wanted. As a tech geek, I like to do this.
But what's keeping me from making the switch is my fear that Cingular will be like my AT&T GSM was a couple years ago. I couldn't use the phone at my house, and my wife couldn't use hers at school or work so it was nearly useless.
I did research to find that Cingular has upgraded towers in my area and they don't use the AT&T technology from before at all. However, my concerns were raised again when I called my brother-in-law to ask him how his Cingular service has been. It was indeed ironic that while he was telling me how great Cingular was, I nearly lost him twice. He would fade to static and the memory of my old AT&T came back as it sounded like the same thing. I guess it could have been my phone but I've never faded to static regardless of how many "bars" I have. If the call drops, it just drops period. It's either crystal clear or dropped. And the poster who said CDMA doesn't care about bars is correct. I never even pay attention to how many "bars" I have. The calls always work. With my AT&T GSM I had to make sure I was nearly fully "bared" or I could forget it. And the bars would rise up and down by the minute even if I was stationary, and this was on the best of three seperate brand phones. (a Nokia)
I've never had that with Sprint. I've dropped a handful of calls at work over the past two years, but I work in a big, steel building with a billion computers and other technology at work. My co-workers with Verizon get no reception at all and have to use their office phones. Since my company uses Cingular they come in really good (there's a tower on our roof). Also, my fadded signal Sprint problems at work go away if I reboot my phone which I do maybe once every 3-4 months.
So the question is whether or not the SIM switch is really that big of a deal or not. I remember why I went to Sprint (reliability) and so I'm hesitant to change. Some Sprint reps tell me my rebate eligibility is intact since I didn't "buy" a new phone, but others say it isn't. So it just depends on who you talk to.
Oh, a side-note. Avoid the stores or kiosks in malls when doing your research. Those high-school kids don't know crap other than, "This is a cell phone. The power button is here. Give me money now." If you talk to the "tech" guy you get info but those guys are always busy troubleshooting someones phone they dropped in the toilet. The omit the "toilet" part though so the tech has to root around until he finds a stray poop fragment.

Verizon Rocks in service!
I'm in Broward County Florida. You have pretty much good service with all the carriers down here.
When I went into NYC with Cingular I've had nothing but droped calls or sometimes the phone would let in the signal but would take a min or two for me to use the phone. that was about 3 years also.
My friend in NY had AT&T it always droped calls on the northern state parkway right near the Nassau county border and Queens border. This same friend went and got g-mobile and that totally stinks all over.
When I had cingular even if Flroida if I was going for a 20-40 mile drive you can pretty much guarantee a dropped call within that range.
I've had absolutely no problems with Verizon. I've been with them over a year now. I can go on 40 mile drives in upstate Florida and not have a dropped call while my other friend (who is for t-mobile for price) who drops calls while going inside. buildings in Broward.
What I don't like about verizon is the ala cart packages and no sim cards. But you know what I have a business and I'm always on the road and I need the relyabilty more.

WHAT I FORGOT TO ADD---- DURING THANKSGIVING OF 2006 I WENT UP TO NEW YORK WITH VERIZON NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH DROPPED CALLS EVEN IN MANHATTAN. I WAS IN NEW JERSEY MANHATTAN WESTCHESTER AND LONG ISLAND (NASSAU0 NO DROPPED CALLS OR SIGNAL DELAYS LIKE I HAD THE THE LAST TIME WHEN I WENT UP WITH CINGULAR

I recently switched from Tmobile to Verizon so far so good, I was with tmo for 5 years and they are indeed cheap and never had to dispute an invoice, very good billing system. In NC Piney Creek, Jefferson, Sparta and all that area no service at all, not even roaming.
Verizon has service pretty much everywhere where I live in South florida and in NC too, they're more expensive that's true and taxes and charges are higher.
I'm considering switching to Cingular but I had their service before the merge with ATT and it wasn't good at all. I had every cellphone service out there ATT, Bellsouth (before it was renamed as Cingular), sprint, nextel, verizon and tmobile and my best experience ever were Sprint and Verizon.
Hopeully I won't be wrong if I switch from VZW to Cingular.
