For the sake of pleasant discussion:
What does everyone think about the move to make Cingular into AT&T Wireless again?
Among other things:
Do you think that it will help their name brand recognition nationwide?
Do you think that this will confuse lingering former AT&T "Blue" customers, or current "Orange" customers?
Do you think this will cause longer hold times to customer/technical support, (and more headaches for CSRs)?
Do you think that the name change will invoke emotions/concerns with customers regarding the "new" company's image in the marketplace?
Your opinions please.

maybe for people who have not paid attention to the wireless industry in the past 2 years.

no question. people will be calling in with regular issues, plus all kinds of questions about the merger. during the last merger, the calls as a whole were different then they are now.

it did with the last merger, i'm sure it will with this one. many blue customers will be celebrating, but the confusion among existing and new customers will hamper the company in the short run.
cingular was tied with sprint for the worst customer service (last place went to companies that went through a merger) and while cingular is recovering this year, they will have to deal with many of the same circumstances that caused their ratings to go down in the past two years.

there's going to be the old blue customers that were migrated to cingular that now would be back to att. They may be mad about that but we'll have to wait and see.

but they won't understand because we'll be telling them it's the new ATT and they'll be like "i'm already ATT...why can't i keep all these promos!"

I agree. I wonder how many new customers this might scare off, as there are apparently a lot of ex-AT&T customers that left for other carriers b/c of the customer service issues.
(No offense to any CSRs in the forum. I've always had excellent service since day one.)
Then again, how long do y'all think that customer's memories will hold?
I mean yes there are those out there that will hold the name AT&T in contempt forever more, but those are rare I think, what about the main stream? Will they forgive and forget?

I am a former AT&T Wireless employee and I am a Cingular customer. Let me tell you, I HATE CINGULAR!!!! They screwed me over when I was a regular/non employee AT&T customer (I had left the company) . So they erased 2 of my promos, so imagine my horror when I received my bill. I was forced to migrate over to Cingular. They screwed up my first bill!! It was pathetic. It wasn't even 30 days and the customer svc rep wouldn't delete the extra cell phone number they activated. He told me to go have Best Buy do it (which they can't). Best Buy was THE ONLY good thing about the Cingular crap activation experience, they demanded a supervisor, explained what happened and finally I got some satisfaction. I'll say it again, give me back the AT&T Wireless of 1998.

ladybella, in 1998 AT&T Wireless, still connected to AT&T, had only TDMA/Analog plans and charged $59.99 for 450 minutes($79/650), no night and weekends, no m2m. Also they did not offer anything but the Digital One Rate (DOR) until 2000. That company could not survive in today's wireless industry. They would be destroyed within a year. Don't get me wrong, I loved AT&T Wireless, both as a child company and a solo company. It was a great and often fun place to work, but it's a different industry now. Cingular does things a bit differently, but in order to be able to push the technology envelope and continue to provide coverage to as many people as possible AND pay their employees... we can't 'give away the store' like we once did. I know that this doesn't address your specific issue, but I've heard hundreds (if not thousands) of people say that the merger was the end of it all.

This should be pleasant enough...
I don't care one way or the other.

I'm going to miss Jack. I really like that logo, it fit the product perfectly.
I like how the Sprint Nextel merger went over. They kept the sprint name, and changed to the Nextel colors.

I have seen on the internet an image that had Jack's body and the "New at&t" (no caps) globe logo for the head. Maybe they can do that? Except he would kind of look like Frankenstein's monster gone wrong.
