So, I've still got almost a year left on my Nextel contract, and am unhappy with their service - both phone reception as well as customer service.
If I choose to port my number to T-Mobile, will my Nextel contract automatically be cancelled, thus resulting in an ETF? Or, could I simply allow my Nextel contract to continue, and make my payments as usual?
Thanks in advance!

you nextel account will have no phone number, and will be cancelled at the time of the t-mo activation. if you're under contract, you will get the fee.

I just did this last week from Cingular to Sprint. Your old contract will expire, and you will automatically start on a month-to-month contract. The day AFTER your old contract expires, call Sprint and have them start your new contract and port your number. When the porting is done, your old contract will expire.
No problem this way with early cancellation fees. Worked just fine, and when I went to Cingular's web site, my account showed as canceled. Once the number is gone, no account left, and they bill you for the few days over your old contract.
You basically "own" that phone number as long as you are paying for it, so you have to port while the number is active. Otherwise, they can sell the number to someone else.

umm actually the way to prevent the ETF would be for you to keep your number on nextel and keep paying the monthly svc fee's like you said and wait it out until your contact expires THEN port your number to the other provider! or with nextel in paticular you can port from nextel to sprint NO etf, NO activation

Sorry, my bad. I thought the contract was expiring. Yes, best to wait until the contract is over, which is what I was referring to in my first post. If it's a month-to-month, then go ahead and port the number.

You might want to check with customer service first, I just did what you want to do, but my contract was expired. The month to month somehow rolled over for one more year. The fees were 200 ETF and 25 port-out fee and also sur-charges on what now is called an antenna charge.

I don't think they can legally charge a port-out fee, but look into this. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of the whole number port thing, it's not hard to tell people what a new phone number is, but you shouldn't get screwed over the deal either.
