Hi,
I do not yet own a E61 but am on the verge of purchasing this unit.
My problem is that I want to use the phone as follows:
1. Phone
2. Access to the web via WLAN or service provider(via WCDMA when WLAN is not available?)
3 Most importantly - and this is where I think this is not possible: I need to get my PC to use the E61 to replace the UMTS card that I have for my PC - a kind of access point so that I can use this device to allow my PC to have access to the web and download my work emails etc. We do not have BlackB support at work. I also want to have general access to the web on my PC and use the E61 to offer the connection.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance/insight offered.
Rgds,
Brendon

you're in the US, right?
the E61 will not operate on cingular's UMTS netowrk, it will only access the GSM/EDGE network.
cingular does not support tethering devices to your PC for a modem. the settings are available, but since the E61 hasn't been released in N. America, I'm not sure if they can be input properly.

You can browse the net on the phone via WLAN (I'm doing it all the time).
You can't use the WLAN on the E61 as access point.
Maybe somebody will program an application which can do it.
But software-developement for the new Symbian OS which is used is slow... and I've got no idea if the WLAN is that accessable for apps.
But: the CA-52 cable (successor of the DKU-2 cable) is inlcuded. At least you could connect via cable and then dial-up... like nearly all phones it can be used as modem.

The E61 is referred in the manual as "E61-1". I asume there will be a "E61-2" for the US when released.

Guys Thanks for the response.
I am living in Germany and was hoping that I could gain access via WLAN or the service provider at a high bandwidth. Björn, I guess dial up is really slow???
Theoretically the Access Point application should be possible via cable or bluetooth?

Ah, Germany... my turf
As I said: you can't use the phone via WLAN as access point.
But once connected via Bluetooth or cable (which is provided) the phone is also recognized as modem.
From what I know all German provider should support dial-up via UMTS...
But I've got no idea how much it will cost. I never tried to dial up. You better ask your provider for this.

At the moment my workaround is like that. Macbook dials a UMTS connection (bluetooth) and then shares the internet connection and the e61 connects to the internet via WiFi because it can't use the modem connection.
Because it is possible to have a wifi connection and a umts (3G) connection open at one time (not modem but the regular connection) it must be possible to route the data in the device so that is becomes an access point, meaning it connects to UMTS and other devices can connect to it via WiFi(and go online). Any ideas who could program something like that?
Regards,
Chris
PS live in Germany (base-flatrate)

Check out this site http://www.nokia-asia.com/nokia/0,8764,91842,00.html. I believe it shows how to set up the E61 as an internet modem.
Why is the US so far behind in technology? You europeans will be flying in space ships by the time my Nokia E61 serves as an internet access point for my MacBook.
Save room for me. I'm coming over first chance I get.

It was not in question to use the phone as modem. The question was:
The phone dials up and shares its connection via WLAN/wifi with other devices.
I guess there will be a program in the future...
