I didn't intentionally buy locked phones. I did not know that they were locked or I would not have bought them. In canada, if a phone has a SIM card you can transfer carriers without having to unlock them.

Hi.
I tried the unlock service and they could not do it so they refund my money. No worries. I have another phone now.

If it happens again, check out the moto forum, there are various ways of unlocking, also some private stores authorized to sell a brand have a smart clip for unlocking, they'll charge you like 25 bucks

I work for the International Department of Cingular (18003354685/19168434685) We are probably the ones who deal with the questions of unlock codes the most.
GSM cell phone carriers in North America in particular agree with the manufacturers of cell phones that they will offer them at little or no price on the condition that you can't use them with anyone else's service. Also known as a Subsidy Lock. This is also why they come with contracts so that if you don't stay with the service the cost of the phone can be recuperated.
GSM cell phones from other contries usually aren't locked because they have different contracts with the manufacturers.
Cingular has specific policies for releasing of their unlock codes (which seeme to change slightly month to month.) These codes are produced by the manufactures so unless they have provided them to us we have to ask them for it (hence the 5-7 business days for turn arround.) They are also very specific to the serial number or IMEI of the phone.
The main rule for Cingular for unlocking is that unless you paid full price and can fax us documentation of that, you have to have an account. If you know the phone number that was with the phone orriginally and it wasn't reported lost or stolen we will sometimes be able to get it for you without (if we have the code in our systems skipping the paperwork).
I know as I've unlocked phones for use in Canada, I've gotten them to work in other countries as well. We always suggest requesting them well in advance of a trip as once you got it it's your choise when to enter it as they never change, but sometimes I'm sure they get lost in someone's paperwork. Seen them take up to 3 weeks.
My problem is I know too much about Cingular phones and I now have to figure out how to unlock my brother's Rogers phone for his trip to Thailand!

If you had my number could you unlock it? I am a Cingula customer and did contact them. That was two months ago and they still haven't gotten back to me. They said they'd email the code to me but did not.
If you would email me maybe we could discuss some other problems.
Thanks,
