I'm new to this site and am a bit of a dope when it comes to technology, so forgive me if I'm asking a really silly question.
I tried to cleanup my outbox on my phone and it says "Cannot delete locked messages". In addition, it no longer tells me who those messages were sent to, it just says "none". I can't open the messages either - it says "operation failed".
Any ideas?

Messages that are locked are ones that you chose to hold onto, if you select the actual message and go to the menu it will give you an option to unlock, As to how they are showing on the phone, go into your inbox and hit menu and it should have a setup option that will change how you view the inbox

Can you delete them with MPT or P2k tools?
Are the messages saved to sim? In that case could you have had the sim in another device which has locked them?

I tried all of that - nothing worked. They weren't showing up on phone tools.
In the end I took drastic action and did a master clear - that did the trick.

Cheap trick to delete messages on a SIM, remove the SIM from the phone and insert another, boot the phone, then bring it down and re-install your SIM. Usually when switching SIMS phone to phone it clears the messages. Instead of having to do a master reset or a master clear at least.

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my outbox as you were having. However, I have no idea what a "master clean" is or how to activate that.
When I try to delete messages in the outbox, especially old sent out pics, it either says "sending in progress. delete anyway?" (but the yes doesn't do anything) or it says "cannot delete a locked message". I didn't lock any of these messages.
Please Help!

This setting can be found here: Menu: Settings>Initial Setup>Master Clear. If you can swap another Cingular SIM into your phone and boot your phone first, usually that will wipe your SMS clean. Master clear will wipe other settings as well.
