That's disturbing. Isn't that pretty much standard these days?

Yes, I was surprised that a High Tech phone didn't have speakerphone, but I think I knoe why the didn't put one. I think they added that thing to play music in the background and access the menu at the same time besides adding the speakerphone. It would have been better if it had both.

I'm not crazy about the design of the chocolate. I hope that isn't an indicator that all phones are going that direction or I'll refuse to upgrade.

Well the new VX9900 (which is the upgrade of the VX9800) is going to have speakerphone. I don't think that more phones are not going to have speakerphone. They just screwed up this one!!

From what I read they decided to not go with the speakerphone because while you have the (VZ) headphones in and a call comes through the music stops and can be used answered and then when the call ends the music starts back up. Of course to use this feature you need to buy the VZ headphones that have the call/answer/end button on them. Extra cost but a pretty cool feature. The headphones come with the music essentials kit which also has software and a USB cable. The USB cable is well worth the money since you can also use Bitpim with it to transfer contact lists to the phone, ringtones, pictures, music, playlists, etc. etc.

There is a speaker on the back that is used for music and voice commands, I don't understand why it couldn't be used for speakerphone as well.
I bought the MEK. When I received a call while listening to music with the VZ headphones, I touched the connect key on the phone to answer the call. After the call, the music automatically resumed. I don't believe the VZ headphones are necessary.

There is a new software for the lg 8500 that makes the phone have speaker in calls. Go to vzw store for more details.

I know, I've heard about it. It enables the speakerphone and eliminates that sofTware bug. I know that it does more but I have'nt gotten to hear about it.

Interesting about the Chocolate not having a speakerphone. We wanted speakerphones on our next upgrade, but liked the feedback about the VX8500 (Chocolate). We were pleasantly surprised to see that they do have a speakerphone now !
