I followed these directions. You do need to do the lame library download. I went to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/hel...l&item=lame-mp3 however the page isn't found. So I looked around a little bit and found the download button and then down loaded the windows version 1.2.4. Everything worked like The Rever said!
Thanks, Kelly
To make ringtones:
I found a program to easily make ringtones, Audacity, which is compatible for both Mac and Windows. And it's small and free.
It works beautifully. It's also pretty easy to learn and use.
Here's a step-by-step to make ringtones for your 8300:
I drag the song to my desktop, open Audacity and choose File and Open, and select the song (I have the song file in AIFF). I then use the selection tool (top left corner, looks like a capital "I") to select the portion of the song I want, or I put the cursor where I want the portion to end and go to Edit, Select, and choose one of the options. I then go to File and Export Selection As MP3. I save it to my desktop. (By the way, I often increase the volume of these ringtones. Find the slider next to the small speaker emblem at the top left and move it to the right. I set them to 6 or 7, depending upon the original audio quality.)
I then open my email program (Entourage - Mac) and attach the file and send it to my tendigitcellnumber@vzwpix.com
Remember to keep the file size to less than 350kb. When it arrives to your phone, open it and it will begin playing. Choose Options (right softkey) and save it.
Oh, and unless you have one of those text messaging deals with Verizon, I think sending them costs .25 or something[/b]

This isn't working for me.
When I go to menu and press "0" seven times, I don't have option #11 to change music settings. It only has 10 options. When I do the other steps without this, it says it can't open pix message (the MP3).
Edit: I can get .wav files into "My Sounds," but even then I can't make them ringtones. How do I do this?

Jrm....is your phone a chocolate????
You don't need to change the settings to play mp3s....My husband has as 8300 and his plays the ringtones without changing the settings.

Yeah, it's definitely a Chocolate.
I did figure out how to make files that I send save as ringtones, but I did the same was as on my old crappy LG ~5200. I still can't get it to recognize MP3's when they are sent as "pix," though, regardless of how small the file size. I am guessing this is because I can't do the first step, which is going to menu, pressing "0" seven times and then picking option #11, since option #11 is nonexistent and there is no music or mp3 option at all.

Making mp3 ringtones for the LG VX8500 (Chocolate) is very simple.
Open your favorite mp3 song using Audacity. Edit the song anyway you see fit. Then save the project as an mp3. You can only do this if you have the Lame plugin. I unzipped this into the Audacity directory and then pointed Audacity to the lame enc.dll file when prompted to do so.
Now to get the mp3 clip onto the VX8500 to use it as a ringtone. I downloaded and installed Bitpim. Get Bitpim here http://www.bitpim.org/#download
Using the USB cable that comes in the Music Essential Kit open Bitpim. At first Bitpim will detect your phone as "Other CDMA phone" Go into the "edit settings" and change phone type to LG-VX8300. Apparently the VX8300 is similar enough to the VX8500 that Bitpim allows you to access your ringers, pictures that you take with 1.3megapixel phone.
Now you can drag and drop the mp3 clip that you created into the ringers section of Bitpim then click "send to phone" and your done.
You just created and uploaded a ringtone for free and you can do this all day long without being charge one dime from VZW.

I drag my mp3 to my desktop and open it on audacity but the song takes forever to load I haven't even loaded it yet, I think because it isn't saved as an AIFF how do I do that? or does anyone else have an explanation to why this isn't working for me?

jrm ... if you're getting a text message that says you need to log onto a website to view your pix message then you're problem is that you need to change a Verizon Wireless account setting. You can do so by either calling them or setting your account up on internet and changing it there.
If you do it online, when you sign in, at the bottom right of the web page you'll find:
My Plan
*Add a line
*Change calling plan
*Add/Change features <-- click on this one.
On the next screen, select your mobile number if you're on a shared plan and click "Continue>."
On the next screen you're features are listed. At the top there "Included Features" listed for your phone plan. Below this are two columns. The one on the LEFT has activated features you can REMOVE and on the RIGHT you have unactivated features you can ADD.
If you have:
"Video & Picture Messaging ($0.25/Message): Text Messaging ($0.10/Message)"
in the "Add Features" column on the RIGHT, click the box next to it and "Next>" at the bottom of the page and whatever comes after to update it (like "Add," "Save," or "Update" ... I didn't go that far this time because I already did this ... just can't remember what comes next).
After adding this feature, wait a while (several minutes) and try sending an mp3 and opening it again.
It should work assuming that was the problem.
