I understand what you mean by turning up the volume in Audacity, but you're doing the wrong thing.
What you need to do is turn up the AMPLIFICATION. Look for a little slider or numerical value measured by decibels (-db). Turn that up, but NOT VERY MUCH. This increases the general decibel level of the song, therefore making that song play loud on ANYTHING. Turn it up too much though, and you'll not only lose sound quality, but you might end up blowing out a speaker.
Turning up the volume in Audacity just makes it louder through your computer. Same thing on your phone. If you want to increase the volume through any format, increase the amplification. Try that out and see if your phone plays the song louder.
P.S. This is officially the 100th post on this thread | Woohoo! Thank so much! Problem solved. Just one more question though. What would be the max db should I up the song to? Like you said, I don't want to blow up my phone's speaker. The song that I just sent to myself is 5db louder than before. Is that okay, or too much? Thanks Spunko!

To be honest, it varies with the song. Production companies don't have any type of volume level standard, so some songs will play louder/softer than others. For instance, I've noticed that songs distributed by Disney Studios tend to be produced at a lower volume (maybe to not hurt little kid's ears?), while songs distributed by say, Drive-Thru Records are a lot louder right off the cd.
Try experimenting with the ringtones before you send them to your phone, and see how loud you can set them before you start to hear distortion on your own computer speakers (if you have an iPod or similar mp3 player, you can put the ringtone on there multiple times in varying amplifications to hear the results). As a general rule of thumb, I base the amplification on the majority of type of sound the song plays. If the song is bass-heavy (Rap, techno music), I increase the amplification only a little bit, since lower levels of sound cause more stress on speakers than mid-to high-level sounds.

I am trying to find a sound editor to make ringtone clips for my Chocolate. I read a post from Spunko about wavepad, but it is for windows. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

the vzwpix method works really well
the first time i tried it, it took 11 hrs for the songs to make the transition to my phone
yesterday, it took all of 3 minutes
might be easier than fiddling with the bluetooth method! |
I tried this method few times but i always get a Undeliverable Message email after I sent. I tried with 3 different email provider and get the same result. Is there anything I should pay attention to? Like subject, text or this vzwpix just don't work anymore?

Whats up everybody. I landed here because of a problem that was kind of ignored.
it was when sw0lej0el chimed in on his "PhoneStringDecodeException: Unable to decode" error. I have a similar problem but can provide more info. My error reads:
PhoneStringDecodeException: Unable to decode <'mmc1/my_music/05 just be - ti\xc3\xabsto.mp3'> using codec <ascii>
However the file its trying to refer to isn't on the phone anymore. The mp3 has an acsii caracter in it i beleive:
05 Just Be - Tiësto.mp3
See the funny e
Anyway this error stops us from proceding. It retrives phone info but nothing in the check list.
Oh and im interested in the rest of bitpims functionallity, not just the ringtones.

Try bluetooth ......get a USB bluetooth device. BitPim connects flawlessly with my Mac laptop. Check the previous pages for screenshots of my setup...make sure you have the correct port for Bitpim to communicate and make sure you have 'discoverable' turned on the Chocolate.
