Yeah, I haven't figured out why the txt doesn't play the mp3 file. However, if the file has been converted into .qcp file, it works just fine. The only thing is that the quality isn't that great. Someone did post asking why the file played was really crappy and it was converted into like 40kb. This is because somehow the mp3 file got converted into a .qcp file which compresses the size to ~40kb.

So... info for QCP files can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QCP -- It is a file format for voice ringtones, typically used by phone companys such as Sprint. However, it can also work for the Verizon Chocolate VX8500 -- I have not tested it out on other phones.
If you are doing the e-mail method, this works the same way. Only thing is that you have to convert your mp3 file into a .wav format (which can be done with audacity or wavepad), and can be editted in wavepad to remove bass and lower volume (you don't want to bust your speakers on your phone). Finally, you convert the .wav file into a .qcp file and then e-mail it to yourself.
Here's a recommended site to dL the .qcp converter: http://pcspix.com/tones.html
Here's a recommended tutorial for .wav editing and .qcp conversion using Wavepad: http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/geek/entries/2006/03 /16/my_ringaling.html
Again, it's not as good as mp3 files for ringtones, but it will have to do for now until someone has found a way to go around v5 and the "silent" picture msgs.
Tip: to convert into .qcp file, open the .wav file in the PureVoice program (or drag and drop), then click on File then Convert. Then Save As. and you're done!
Hope this helps.

nelendil12, I downloaded Wavepad, and PVConverter. but when I go to open my file w/ PVC, I can't figure out how to change it over. And I've read the tutorials you've also recommended. Any help?

Hello, I have the LG Chocolate v8500 with Verizon. I know that many people have problems with Verizon blocking the BitPim program, so I've combined many tips on how to get your own custom ringtones. You MUST be able to recieve picture messages for this to work.
This is my solution:
1. Download Audacity (Google it for downloading sites).
2. Grab your favorite song and use Audacity to cut your favorite 15-20 second part of the song.
3. Go to File->Export as MP3. and save your file. It will remind you that you need the LAME_enc file, so download it if you don't already have it.
4. Now that you have your MP3 15-20 second clip, go to a website that converts MP3 files to QCP files. QCP files are the kind that is normally used for ringtones. I use this website: http://media-convert.com/convert/
5. On that website, browse for your file. For the input format, select MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3 (.mp3), which is under the -Sound- heading.
6. For the output format, select PureVoice File (.qcp), which again is under the
-Sound- heading.
7. Doublt check that you have selected the above formats and that you browsed for the correct file.
8. Check the box that you accept the terms, and hit Convert.
9. After it is done converting that part, it will tell you that you need to wait for data processing. Wait until that is done, DO NOT refresh the page.
10. When you get to the Conversion Options page, set the Encoding Bitrate at 128 (you may customize this, but I use the 128 Bitrate), and select the CBR method.
11. Again, wait until the data processing is complete.
12. Click on the link to download your file. Press Save, save the file, and you're done!
13. You can also open your file in your default media player. To do this, select Open instead of Save.
14. If your media player doesn't open, click the download link again, and click the link that appears on the page.
15. Hit the download button, and save the file.
Now you have to email this to your phone.
1. Compose an email to yourphonenumber@vzwpix.com
(yourphonenumber is ten digits) ex.5551234567@pzwpix.com
2. Attach the QCP file that you just converted.
3. Send a blank message.
4. Your phone will recieve a picture message, open it and the sound file will play automatically.
5. Under Options, select Save As Ringtone.
6. Set your new ringtone, and you're done!
Enjoy!
EDIT 1: This counts as a picture message to your phone.

thanks CarlysHelpline, but to send it to the phone does it count as a text or pix message? because text, video, & picture messaging is blocked on my phone. i tried to do your method but it didnt work so i guess its like a text.

I followed the steps you posted above but I get an error message saying "failed to play pix msg" when i try to open the message from my phone.
its in the qcp format and its 36kb.
EDIT:
I've tried shortening the clip, different output settings and nothing works.
I think QCP may be the wrong format?
Also, I've tried using the LG Download and BitPim but I still can't upload the files in bitpim even though I do get to the NV edit menu successfully.
