Download the latest version of BitPim. You must have a good USB cable, cheap and easy to get on ebay. It will let you download ringers to the VX8500 w/o the LG utility. Fairly easy to use.

I try to play it again and get nothing.if i try to save it as a ringtone i get an 'ERROR SAVE SOUND' message.anybody have any ideas about what i'm doing wrong. I have a chocolate and have verizon.I tried emailing it to myself both through hotmail and gmail and both failed

This message goes out to all trying to email your ringtones. DON'T DO IT! Too many people in this thread are having problems with that method
The easiest way to get your ringtone is:
1. Buy the USB Cable
2. Download latest version of BitPim
3. Follow instructions for downloading the ringtones from Bitpim but you may have to use the addendum to those instructions which can be found on page 29 of this thread.
You DON'T need Audacity.
Voilla!

i know people are advocating the usb cable/bitpim route. thanks for the info, i will get to that when i get a chance to sort it all out.
that said, does anyone know if there's been a software or system change? i used to email myself ringtones as described earlier in this thread and it worked perfectly fine. the last time i tried was in mid may or so. alas i just tried today and i seem to be getting some of the same errors more recent posters have encountered. i liked the email route, it really was easy and seamless and i'm just curious, so if anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated. thanks!

Bobbychang, Hmm. I've been hearing there has been some changes that would prevent one from emailing ringtones. Since the email has to go thru their servers, they can control all that jazz.
However, that's where Bitpim comes in. Once Bitpim works the first time for you, it should work all the time as long as you don't take your phone in for upgrades or change phones.
