| Quote: | | Try renaming it to .mid, like it says in my previous posts (I think it's on page 35). It hasn't failed me yet. |
Sadly that didn't work either. It emailed just fine to my cell (vx8500) but it just shows the attachment and doesn't play it

Hmmm, I just started having the same problem with my midi form. I'm researching some more, but if anyone has any connection in VZW and knows what's going on, please do jump in.

Having very frustrating problems with my LG vx8550 (TELUS), and bitpim.
I want to get ring tones onto my phone without having to pay $5 a pop for a badly chosen clip of my song.
Ive got the most recent version of bitpim, 1.0.3
I don't know if the fact I'm on Telus could be screwing me up, because Ive seen posts by others with the LG vx8550 that, frustratingly, say 'Ive had no problems, bitpim works great blahblahblah!'
My problem is that Bitpim cannot detect my phone at all.
I plug in my phone, choose 'USB Mass Storage Device' so that my computer recognizes 'New Hardware' and I am able to access the 'Removable Disk' that is my phone my C:.
However, when starting Bitpim, I receive this message:
'No phone detected/recognized. Run Settings?'
Yes results in the opening of a window called 'BitPim Settings', containing such information as Phone Type, Com port, Com timeout. The only Com port available upon clicking 'browse' is COM1 or 'Automatic'. My phone is not detected using either.
Using a drop down menu in this setting window, I can choose my phone model, but this does not help in anyway. I can also click 'Phone Wizard' to try and select my phone, also does not work.
I should mention that while first trying to Install bitpim, the install application would unexpectedly fail and crash without any error messages. I would have to restart the program. It would crash at random times throughout install, sometimes at 1%, sometimes at 95%, but eventually it finished installing.
Is it possible that during install, not all files were correctly copied, and that BitPim is no functioning properly? What is it that could have caused the crashes during install?
Would reverting to an earlier version of BitPim help?
I should also mention that, On the official bitpim site my phone is not listed in the 'Working Phones' list. However in the Program Updates/Bug Fixes for BitPim 1.0.1, it is mentioned that the LG VX8550 is now supported '(initial)'.
I would really really appreciate some help with this.
Does anyone have any suggestions of alternate methods to get my own free ring tones onto my phone?
Someone mentioned in another thread that 'Its as simple as sending myself a message with my mp3 attached, then choosing 'Set as ring tone'!' Although that is definitely impossible and not an option for me. 'Save as Sound' is an option, but from the sound folder it is not able to be set as my ring tone.
Are there alternate programs to BitPim? Is the cell phone fairy going to save me?

Okay, it looks like Verizon went and lowered the limit on size of the message. I got my ringtone down to 185K by transcoding to a lower bitrate and it went through. I tried it with a file that was around 287K. it failed.
I think they may have lowered their filesize limit when originating as email. I was able to forward a 317K ringtone that I already had to another verizon phone.
My guess is, the limit is either 200 or 250K.

i just got the new chocolate phone (not the old version). i was able to cut a sound file and send it through bluetooth to my phone. it was automatically saved in the "my sounds" folder. however when i select the sound and go to options, it does not give me the option to set it as ringtone? is there a way to do this? nor does it give me the option to save the new file into the "my ringtones" folder when it is sent through bluetooth. i havent seen any posts addressing this on the new chocolate phones. step by step instructions would be great!

when the song comes in the media message, you have to select "save as ringtone" not just "save". This option is usually after "save" on the options menu.
selecting "save" will save it to the My Sounds folder instead.
